Hi - I am parent of D22 . We have been receiving lot of print mail and emails to school email address about joining this society ( National Society for High School Scholars or some such thing) to pay up $75 etc. Is this a legit organization? Is this of any use?
Thanks in advance for your views on this one.
I would not go so far as to call it a scam, but let’s be real. The selection bar is low. It’s pay-to-play. And there is no real benefit to the student.

Frame the letter. Don’t waste your money joining.

It’s the first for many. Unfortunately they continue in college as well. Every semester D gets invitations to join this “honor societies” or that…for a cost.

I will say that they’re quite persistent.
It’s “legit” as in they do exist, they’ll send you a certificate and discount codes and the other things promised for your membership fee. But it really just means that you paid the money - it won’t hold any prestige/meaning to anyone.

It’s the first of many.
As a general rule, if there’s a fee, it isn’t going to be a huge boost to a college app. Especially not for any kind of honor society. Having to pay to be part of an honor society, to which a student has allegedly been “exclusively” invited, defeats the purpose of being invited in the first place.
As attributed to Groucho Marx, although he certainly did not coin it, “I don’t care to belong to any club that will have me as a member”
