NSLI-Y Program.

About the passport… I requested mine last week and I am now waiting anyone know how long it takes to get a visa? Thanks and good luck to all

Yeah, I’m so awesome, i’m classified under “Random”. I need to send everything in by tomorrow if I’m going, and it’s killing me. I’m just lost on whether or not it is worth it for me to go. It would help me grow, but at the cost of academics. Anybody feel like giving me a better idea of both sides of the coin (hopefully someone who did a semester course before)?

Chewy-
Go for it!
I can not express how much to you that you will learn. This summer, i had the privlegde to visit Russia,Estonia,Latvia,Lithuania, Poland, the Czech Republic & Germany with thirty complete strangers from NH,VT,ME,MA,&NY for 21 days. I learned SO much not only about me, but about, like, life, lol. You never know if you’ll have the chance to ever to this again. I’ve grown SOOO much.
Granted it was not with NSLIY, but you get the point.
i highly encouage you to take this oppurtunity by the horns go for it.

Just got an email about conference calls for AFSers (I guess they’re doing them by sponsoring organization)…Who’s in for Wednesday?

Chewy, If you look at other CC boards, people say that pre-calculus is not very important for calculus and that it can be learned in less than a year. My daughter says she is top of her class in S. America in pre-calculus even though she had never studied Spanish until this year. You’ll probably be okay with math. The AP chemistry, maybe not, but what about taking a different AP science class that you could self study like environmental science (supposed to be very easy) or biology (supposed to be challenging but based on memorization of vocabulary and concepts). NSLY-I is such a great opportunity. I’d hate for anyone to miss it. A Mom and former AFS exchange student

PS When it comes to college applications, who’s going to stand out more - someone who took AP chemistry or someone who spent a semester in Asia, Africa or the Middle East? I say GO FOR IT!

heysoulsister - we have heard nothing too/made it to the semi-finals in DC but nothing since then, but then again our high school graduates late (6/22) and we only applied for one program and I think they leave b4 then…

so then I figured out oops! we are left out b/c of the departure dates and the conflict with the graduation date, that I should contact them and say, hey! any language will do!! because there were a couple that left after our graduation date…so I phoned and left a message and also emailed, but I know it probably was fruitless but I thought if we don’t give it a shot that would be a zero.

I am in the china summer program and just got an email saying the conference calls will be held on Wednesday and thursday this week and also on may 5! Can’t wait lol

Hey everyone,

I’ve discussed it with my family (and used some of Apollo’s words) and decided that it was best if I rejected the scholarship. I understand that this is a great opportunity, but looking at how rigid my school curriculum is, I would go through Hades and back a few times trying to catch up. Out of desparity, I also contacted the organizers, and they basically told me to take the offer or try again next year (strongly against tutors, overseas AP Chem and Pre-Calc). I may try again in senior year. By that time, the majority of you guys will be in college! Overall, this entire nerve-wracking experience has been interesting for me, and hey, I got something to put on my CV! Congratulations to the one who receives my spot! Study well! I will be hanging around on here, do give updates on your adventures.

Lily (aka chewydog)

p.s. I will be keeping the blog I made, just changing the name to “Secret Asian Meets Earth” as I do constantly travel on my own. Feel free to check it out sometime!

Oh, forgot to mention: depending on where in China some of you guys are heading off to, I may be able to watch you from afar, because I’ll be chilling with family and friends in many cities there. Thank goodness I speak Asianese

I got in to China Spring Semester! Good luck to everyone who hasn’t heard yet. I know it’s torture, but just stay optimistic! After all, you never know!

And I am planning on doing the conference call tomorrow. So many questions! I just want to make sure I didn’t read the letter wrong, we only have to attend one, correct? For the three upcoming ones, at least.

Yup, they said to choose one of the three. I assume that there will be more later on specific to our country/length.

ok thanks, watchmesoar! And yeah, I think you’re right, they probably will get more specific.

Ugh, still haven’t heard on China summer. No use whining, but I was kinda pinning all mh hopes on NSLI-Y. I was so exited! Well, things do happen for a reason…:)

It’s great to hear that u got accepted cmlblack, because, as I remember from a few pages back, you were the one who sounded very hopeless and got a reply from me telling you to keep up your hopes. I on the other hand have not yet gotten a reply and feel really left out now that you got your reply. OMG, I just hope I didn’t get wait-listed or even rejected. Congrats though!

just got a rejection letter - 3:15 p.m. today : (

Goalpost - what was the subject line? Was there an attachment of any kind or just the email??

OH no goalpost, was that for your step-daughter or son

Oh that’s right - that was the parent with two applicants. Yikes.

I can’t check emails from school, so I’m still waiting. Doesn’t look good though, as most people are getting rejections at this point over on EC.

Good luck to all of you next year!!
