NSLI-Y Program.

My interview wasn’t actually a group one. It was one-on-one in an office, so I’d assume that my tips would be pretty applicable to your situation. However, I do believe there were a few people that had home interviews, so see if you can find them for more info.

I did get to go last year! Russia 2010. I’ll hopefully be returning this summer, but who knows. Glad to see you’ll be re-applying next application session.

Good luck on your second application! I’m sure you’ll get in.

What should we bring to the interview? Anything?

would a high waisted skirt with long sleeves and stirups be ok?

Hey everyone! I’m new to this forum haha. I applied for the Hindi, Chinese and Arabic programs all for the summer. I’m currently a junior from the midwest. I got picked as a semifinalist and my interview is this sunday :OO. Does anyone know what kind of questions they’ll be asking? and what type of tone do they want responses in?

They want to see how genuine your interest is, how culturally adaptable you are, how poised and articulate you are. Just relax, be honest and open.

hey everyone
i’m also a semi-finalists for nsli-y, my top choices were chinese, hindi, and any for the third choice. i had my interview yesterday and i think i talked a little too much, but she said she hopes to see my name on the finalists list in march. is there anyone else from california or going to a boarding school?

chewydog- Thanks so much for the tips!!! They really help! Good luck to all who are applying!

Hi giasanku, welcome to this ridiculously long thread about NSLI-Y =] For future reference, if you are able to find questions answered in the previous pages, it will save the sanity and cookie jars of many other forum members if you check before you ask. I must emphasize that I reaaaaaaaaaallly like my pretty cookie jar with its chocolate chip cookies. Yum. Anyways, good luck at your interview!

To everyone else who seeks my awesome fashion advice, I must tell you that I am overloaded with the questions of doting fans and cannot answer your question. I apologize for not being an Italian with a fashion sense that applies to everyone.

Neon, you’re very welcome ^_^

Good luck to all!

My interview is tomorrow!
Any advice?
For scenario questions, are they looking for a specific answer or do they just want to see how you would react?
Also, I only put Chinese Summer down as an option. Will this hinder my chances?

If you have already had an exchange/study abroad experience, don’t stress too much. My daughter, a Rotary rebound, mostly ended up talking about her exchange experience with her AFS volunteer interviewers. She said it was fun and that she would have enjoyed talking to them further. As a parent I was asked what I thought would be the most difficult aspect of the program for her. The only thing I could think to say was the travel since most of the places require a long trip and a big time difference. I knew that she could handle the language learning and host family experience. Good luck, all. I hope you all get good news this spring.

My interview is tomorrow!

Son’s interview was today. It was casual, relaxed, and friendly. However, we left having no sense of how well he did. They told us the interview part is 20 points out of 100 (the application being the remaining 80 points). Many of the questions were for placement purposes, for example, would you be OK if the host family smoked? That was something we never thought about before. Now, we wait…

My interviewer told me that finalists get a home interview…is that correct?
I’ve just been reading this thread and no one ever mentioned a final home interview as part of the process.
Is that a new aspect they are instituting this year?

I just had my interview today. I loved talking with my interviewer and the conversation was open and friendly…so I hope I did well. I just don’t know if it’s like that for everyone so who knows.

and now we wait for decisions I guess…

I went online and found out that this program is only for U.S. citizens? So does that mean permanent residents can’t participate in the program?

My interview went perfectly. Really. We connected on EVERYTHING!

My interview went well. I stumbled on a few questions, but overall it went pretty good. The interviewer said I was a good candidate. :)

Hey, dudess. I just had my interview and it went pretty awesome, but anything can happen. Good luck to you all! (:
