NU Sophomore Taking Questions (contd.)

achach, I agree with uc_benz. You kind of sound like a real jerk..

Sorry-but.......grow up or go to Chico State.

hehe cant wait to see you guys on campus.

Primab,
Are you on facebook?
(I was going to pm you, but you don't have the option turned on)

Not on facebook yet. Are you? And 'cuz you never really know who is lurking around these sites (like do you really think achach is a student? I don't...)-I haven't entered any personal info.... But....I'm sure we'll meet for sure at NU!

Yeah, I'm on facebook.
I understand. :)

Facebook Me! ;)

I already have!

primab- I hope you dont make friends with a "real jerk" next year.

what is the gpa system northwestern uses? 4.0 for 95 and above 3.8 for 90and above and so on... is it possible to get higher than a 4.0?

4.0 93 - 100
3.7 90 - 92
3.3 87 - 89
3.0 83 - 86
2.7 80 - 82
2.3 77 - 79
2.0 73 - 76
......

and is there a strict quota or does it depend on teachers for each class
for instance do the teachers say at teh beginning of teh year im going to have 10%a's 25 % b's and so on therefore even if u get an a, u could get a b depending on how well ur classmates have done

Deferred, I don't know anything about teacher's grading strategies. Some departments have more grade inflation than others. Expect the hardest fields to have huge curves.

In the quarter system, is it constantly like you're studying? I mean with mid-terms and finals there isn't much break in between, so is that worth it?

Daniyal, Northwestern makes sure the transition in your freshman is not difficult. As a sophomore, the quarter system can be brutal depending upon how you choose your courses (I do not recommend all reading-intensive courses or all math-intenseive courses in one quarter!) It's typical to have your first midterm by the 3rd-4th week after the quarter starts. I have no problem with the final exam dates. It is bad that you leave in June where everyone else leaves in May. There are pros and cons with the system, but it's no better or worse than the semester system.

wait so if nu is on teh quarter system
how many classes does one have per day or per week
like i know at ut they have 3 classes 3 days of the week
and 2 on the other 2

Deferred, on average, you're in one course 3 hours per week. It depends upon how that class is broken into. 1 day = 3 hours, 2 days = 1.5 hours, 3 days = 1 hour
a week. This excludes discussion sections and labs. Most students take 3-4 classes per quarter.

how long did YOU spend on schoolwork? and how much free time did you have. you said you lived in sargent right? i think thats where i want to live even though i'll probably be a eco major

That really varies widely among different majors. I was doing ChemE and it was obvious that we had a lot more work than average.

bump bump bump (I may need to start a new thread. hah!)

tensighs,

Perhaps time to try taking 5 classes? ;)
