Which dorms are the best ones on campus in terms of cleanness and location? also, does only residential colleges has suites? I prefer a dorm where I have a roommate and possibly share the bathroom with just my roommate, is that possible? Thanks for your help!!!

ILoveSugar, I strongly recommend that you check the housing website on which dorms are residential colleges, have suites, have dining halls attached to the dorms, etc. I know in the past I have answered questions similar to this one, and a website explains it much better than I can.

How about this,
I'm from NY and Northwestern is one of my top schools,
NY is quite a bit ways from IL and it seems like most people that attend NU are from either IL or the states surrounding it

Do you ever run into people from distant parts of the country?

I dunno whad I do if I'd have to go through six months at a time without seeing another New Yorker..heh

Well Julz, I'm going to be there in the fall and I'm from Hawaii, which is a pretty distant part of the country. :) Seriously though, I just looked around the Northwestern website and it seems that about 40 percent of students are from the Midwest (a little over half of which are from Illinois). I'm sure you'd have no problem finding another New Yorker.

julz6587 I'm from New York too. Actually I think New York is well represented. I know a TON of people from California. and lots of other places all over the country. plus there are quite a few international students

Northwestern:
Illinois 26%
Midwest ~45%

Top Feeder States Outside Midwest: California, New York-Massachusetts-New Jersey-Connecticutt and Texas

is that 26 percent part of the 45 percent, or does that mean that northwestern has 71 percent from midwest and illinois.

Dear, Illinois is part of the Midwest.

heh heh heh

I know greek life is big at Northwestern, but do you think it dominates the whole scene, or is it just a nice addition?

Wow, sorry that I provoked such condescension. I'd hope that anyone applying to Northwestern knows that Illinois was part of the Midwest. What I meant was, is the 26 percent, being that Illinois is part of the Midwest, part of the 45 percent.

In clearer words ( if possible) are you sayign that 26 percent of the 45 percent ( midwesterners) [.26x45=11.7 percent of the school is from Illinois) are from Illinois, or that 71 percent of the unviersity is from the midwest, INCLUDING illinois

The statistics that I saw said about 25 percent were from Illinois and about 20 percent were from the Midwest EXCLUDING Illinois, so I presume that Tenisghs meant 45 percent including Illinois.

Exactly, crypticism.

Lola, 40% of the student population is involved in some sorority/fraternity. So if you feel that the Greek scene is not for you, 60% other students are non-Greek. You will find your niche. For example, I'm not part of a Greek and I still have social networks.

freakish,

45% from the midwest (including illinois). its national reputation attracts many from different regions. :)

bump bump bump it up!

I'm not sure if this has been asked already. This thread is so long that I'm too lazy to search through 7 pages of info. Wow, tenisghs your so helpful. Northwestern should be paying you for how well your representing it. Most college students will answer a dozen questions and call it quits. You'll answer a dozen questions and still be willing to answer more (even if they are repeats).

1.) How ethnically/socioeconomically/religiously diverse is Northwestern?

2.) Is Chicago a good college city? I've heard that Chicago has some really bad parts and is freezing cold.

3.) How do you pronounce your name and come up with it?

1) Northwestern is by race and ethnicity 1% Native American, 5% Black, 5% Hispanic, 17% Asian, 15% Jewish, 5% International. Regionally, 25% Illinois, 40% Midwest, other feeder states (Texas, California, NY-CT-NJ-MA, Florida). Socioeconomically, 2% <$50,000, 21% >$250,000. Most people fall within those ranks (~75%). I would say generally upper-middle class but it's a diverse campus.

Check the undergraduate admissions website on Northwestern. They usually have statistics

2) Chicago is a huge and wonderful city to travel. The weather this year has not been cold (back in January yes) so this is definitely one of the warmer winters since I've been here. The bad parts of Chicago are south of Downtown, but Northwestern is in the North Shore suburbs (North of Chicago) so I wouldn't worry. Just practice your street smarts whenever you're in the city alone or with friends.

3) My name is a secret. But thanks for being curious. =)

Tenisghs - You mentioned a while back that the School of Music is underfunded and "aging." Were you referring primarily to the physical facilities? Are there other apparent shortcomings in that school that students perceive? How is its underfunding evident to you, as a non Music major?

i forget where you're from, but i'm 3 hours away by plane. do you think getting home quickly would be a problem? not in terms of the flight, but getting to the airport and such
