The 'School of Music' has aging facilities except for the concert hall. Many students on campus feel that Northwestern needs to do more to renovate the buildings or build new Music facilities. It's on the table, but won't be in construction for quite some time.

As for travel, if you fly to O'Hare, you will only be 30 minutes via car from Northwestern. Fly into Midway, and you'll be 45 minutes from Northwestern. I personally fly into O'Hare because it's closer and cab rates are cheaper too.

tenisghs did you get a likely letter before you were accepted? just curious

Ready, yes I did. I got a postcard.

thanks for responding! also, i am looking to possibly double major (if accepted) in African or Asian Studies. I know there is an African-American Studies major, but I'm mostly interested in just the African Studies as opposed to African American Studies. Could you possibly give me some insight into how the AA major works?

tenis, are you URM or a great athlete? just trying to either support or dispel the myth that only those ppl get likely letters.

I would look at these departments:

African Studies
http://www.northwestern.edu/african-studies/

African American Studies
http://www.afam.northwestern.edu

Asian American Studies
http://www.wcas.northwestern.edu/asianamerican/

Asian and Middle Eastern Studies
http://www.wcas.northwestern.edu/asianandmiddleeast/

I don't know much about African Studies since I'm an African-American Studies double major (so I can only talk about the African experience in the United States, Caribbean and the Americas). Check those websites out. I do know that of the above programs, African Studies and African-American Studies are the strongest departments at Northwestern. We also have the largest separate library on African Studies in the country. I know people who do both programs regardless of their race and ethnicity and enjoy the courses. By 2007, there will be a doctoral African-American Studies program.

Just looking at the website, African Studies only offers a minor. =(

Afaforce, I know white and Asian people before they were admitted into Northwestern that got postcards. Yes, I am an URM. No, I'm not an athlete.

What does being an URM have to do with anything?

I was just wondering if there was some or no chance of me getting one (sorry if I offended you in any way!). I just know that some schools only send "likely" letters/postcards to URMs and athletes during the regular decision round.
Do you happen to remember when you got yours?

afaforce - Calm down (for once, I get to say it to you). I know that it would be really nice to get a likely letter (for the plain fact of just getting one and for the fact that you could relax about NU for once), but I'm sure that not everyone gets one (at least I hope not since I'm pretty sure I won't be getting one). I think we only have something of about three weeks or so left of waiting so we're getting "down to the wire."

tenisghs - I really feel like shooting myself in the foot now for making that thread in the first place (I'm speaking figuratively not literally), and I apologize to you for it.
By the way, I just saw something on NU's website about the cost of attendance increasing for next year, and I feel like I want to be sick just reading about it. What have you heard about this?

Does Northwestern have a language requirement if you are in WCAS?

Thanks crypticism. No, I had not read that yet.

Yankees - yes. It is a two-year proficiency for Weinberg, although many test out of it.

Is that tuition jump really a big shock?? I was under the impression that most schools hike up their tuition EVERY year

Like most schools, Northwestern U is EXPENSIVE.
How do undergrads pay for a Northwestern education?
What is the expected debt undergrads will acquire after 4 years?

Private Joker, it's around $20,000 for expected undergraduate debt.
Check the U.S. News and World Report for an exact amount.

I know I've read approx. $15,000 in several well reputed magazines. But it's been a while, and I don't remember which.

How to pay for an Northwestern undergraduate education:

Parents and their EFC (self-explanatory)

Loans ( a. parents may only pay b. student loans with low interest rates c. subsidized stafford loans)

Work/Study

Grants/Scholarship (free money you win or Northwestern gives you)

bump bump bump it up.

I recommend all freshmen or prospective students to check this entire thread. Lots of questions have been answered. However, if I am wrong, just ask away. Your friendly Northwestern undergraduate.

hello, friendly nu undergrad :) i have a question...so i am taking ap calc bc now and HOPEFULLY i will do well on the AP and will not have to take math in college because i detest it, but if i screw up and do badly cringe can i take a test to test out of it like people test out of the foreign language requirement?
