I know that a lot more people are applying for financial aid, but are the number of total applicants down?

ummm,
i know that you expect that many applicants are not applying.
but… that’s actually the opposite.
well, last year… it was like… the BEGINNING of the economic recession, therefore many people were scared and decided to not apply.
But. this yearr people are seeing hope that it’s going to go back up again, so…
this year’s applicants are more than ever.
I read a news article about Andover and I heard this year is the year that had the most applicants applying to andover… which I thought was ironic too…
but…im telling youu… more people every year… and more competitive every year -,-;
which sucks for me and you.

I heard from a Saint Mark’s admision official that their number of application is also up.

i heard form someone that would know that a top 5 school is down about 10%

Would your disclosing the name of the school be bad for the school? I figure this kind of information is pretty harmless (they themselves will disclose it in a little over a month anyway).

it wouldn’t be bad for the school but could be bad for me. I agree the info is harmless and doesn’t affect any applicants since the apps are already in, but i was told in confidence.

MX is over 1000 applications for the first time ever.

Actually there was an article in the exonian about this last thursday. at exeter there was an 18% increase in the number of applications. This year there were 2,579 candidates and last year there were 2,182. But the number of financial aid applicants has gone down. There was a 10% drop in the number of FA applicants. Last year there were 67% and this year there were 57%

@almost there

Those statistics blow my mind. Not only are there more applicants, but less of them need FA?

Strange, strange world we live in.

Perhaps Exeter had a surge of FA applicants last year because they had announced that they were “need blind.” (Actually, I have never seen anything in writing, but admittedly, didn’t look too hard at Exeter last year.) Then, come March 10th, they weren’t. This ticked a lot of people off and maybe it has had an effect on the # of applicants?

This is pure conjecture on my part. Feel free to ignore me completely :)

The statistic that jumped out at me when posted on another thread was that Exeter’s yield was less than 60%. I would think it would be higher. Whoever posted that, please speak up. I think it was Benley, but I’m not sure. Where did you get those numbers?

No, it was not me, but the information must be out there as these schools do disclose the key statistics after each admission cycle. A drop down of FA applications is good news for FA applicants to Exeter - less competition. I am just curious where those needing FA apply to this year. Though Exeter disappointed some “the last minute” last year, it is still the BS with the largest endowment and it does financially support a big portion of its student body. Very interesting indeed.

p.s. neato, Exeter never “declared” the need-blind policy although they “practiced” it for a couple of years up till last year.

Here’s another theory. Perhaps because of the shift in FA policy, those who are at the margins of qualifying for aid have simply opted not to apply for the aid. The numbers could just be misleading. The applicants could be the same, but just not applying for the aid and hoping they can “make it work.” I dunno.

As Mark Twain (?) liked to say:

Found it!

Posts 93 and 94 has yields for several school posted in May, after the data was made available. Exeter’s was 64%, not as low as I thought.

If I read this correctly, the 2010 number of FA applicants is actually slightly higher:
2009: 0.67 x 2182 = 1462
2010: 0.57 x 2579 = 1470

So… what was it that Mark Twain said?!! ;)

This number may not be accurate. I believe that they had 3000+ preliminary and over 2600 completed applications last year. It was reported in detail on Exonian, such as how many applications to each grade and how many were accepted.

And, about the drop of FA applications - I think it’s due to those “borderline cases” who decied not take chances this year. They would probably still apply for FA to Andover as they promise to be “need-blind”.

Not sure if Hotchkiss is considered a " Top 5 " prep school, but that may be the elite boarding school which had a 10% decrease in applications.

i’m curious. probably naive too. how does one conclude that one is a borderline case?

Hotchkiss is probably considered as a “top 5” because of the acronom HADES.

Well, borderline case = gut feeling.

Thanks, Benley! I mistakenly thought that the acronym was GADES.

Well, borderline case = gut feeling.

OK, but our original gut feeling about our son was that he would be a strong candidate for the top schools he was attracted to. However, after being wowed by the talent level we’ve seen here on cc/prep, we worry that maybe he’s on the wrong side of borderline! This can be a very intimidating forum for us “country mice” from Maine.
