Right now I am a junior. I only have one AP class, which is AP English, and one honors class, which is French 4. I keep seeng people with more AP classes and now I regret that I am not taking more harder classes. Will colleges still think I am challenging myself and accept me? Also , I have a lot of extracurricular activities. Would that make up for not taking enough APs?

Well, it depends on which colleges you want to go into.

Extracurricular activities help if you are really passionate and committed, however, you could always take AP classes in the second semester, or self study and take the AP Tests at the end of the year

Are you comparing yourself to people on CC or in your HS? The rigor of your coursework will be considered relative to what your school offers.

In general, your gpa and difficulty of coursework are more important than ECs.

Agree with archi, much depends on which schools you’re looking at.

I’m sorry I don’t have any citation for this, but I remember that someone on this website once posted that the average number of APs taken by students admitted to elite universities is 4. If anyone can confirm this, please do.

If you mean Harvard or Yale elite, then probably. I will have taken 8 AP classes by the time I graduate, and I’m not applying to the Ivies at all. [Not competitive enough, natch.]

But like everyone else said, it depends on the schools.

Bay

Ben Jones used to blog regularly for MIT

“Based on the thousands of apps I saw last year both in selection committee and as a reader, I can tell you that the average # of AP’s for admitted kids was 5 or 6 (that’s total for all 4 years of HS - i.e. 1-2 per year if evenly distributed).”

i will have taken 9
In my school the average is 7 to 8 though so that’s not even so impressive
of course if it’s different for your school, then don’t worry about it, as long as your grades a decent.
Try and stack up on the honors classes a little more at least though!

I think the average is skewed lower because of the numbers of prep school kids who are admitted to some of the top schools. They don’t have to take as many ap’s to be considered competitive candidates because the rigor of the regular courses at many of them is equitable to the difficulty of an AP at some publics.

Asking how many people take on CC is pretty useless since it’s based on how many your school offers and how many others are taking. I’ll have taken 18 AP classes by the end of senior year, but we have people who will have taken over 20. Here, 12-15 is the norm for applicants who want the most rigorous box checked.

As people have said, it is relative to your school’s cirriculum. My cousin, who went to the school I’m currently attending (6 years ago), got into Stanford with only 2 APs, the maximum amount any student could’ve taken while he was in high school.
