In the past in our school district elementary school classes were kept in the 20 student level, with high school classes having 14 to 35 in the core classes (of course more in band, choir, pe etc.) In the last 2 years after trying to balance the budget because of overspending in the past and state budget cuts, our district has eliminated 400 teacher positions (we are a large district). In the elementary school level they are looking at an average of 30 in a class, and in high school it will be higher. I’m expecting 40+ kids in my son’s ap lit class this year. Also not as many opportunities/classes are available. It will be interesting to see what type of education these kids get. Thankfully only 2 more years to go for my last child.

45 in AP Calc AB
English class had so many desks in it that it was a fire hazard since kids wouldnt be able to get out and they had to change them out for the big round tables- like kindergarten. It’s kinda random with other classes though, ap history could have 20 students in 1st period and 40 in 2nd period.

OP here again. It is interesting to see the range of class sizes. I can not imagine an AP Calc class with 45 kids. D1 had about 9 in hers.

We’ll see what happens with this class. Our normal subject class size is about 18- 22. Band does have about 60, but the entire band meets together as a class.

The class size is currently at 32, with the possibility of a few kids dropping. D2 said it doesn’t seem to be an issue. I will not mention it to the principal, but some parents are trying to get another section opened up.

When class size at all our high schools here approached 40, even in the IB/AP programs, it was time to bail. I don’t care how good a program is, with that many students in a class, it can’t deliver its best. Class size at DS current school averages 12. There is no comparison.

Average urban public: Most core classes have about 25-30. Some advanced/AP classes have less.

D’13’s public city high school is overcrowded but she is in the IB program. They only allow 70 kids in each year and by the time they are seniors probably 20-30 have dropped out. The IB classes can be quite small from 8 kids in english up to almost 30 in spanish or a history class. Not sure how big the regular classes are but will find out as soon as S’16 starts on Tuesday.

33 max in any class generally EXCEPT for
Band (atleast 40-80 kids)
Marching band (150+ kids)
Chorus (40-45 kids)
Art? (40-45 kids)
Gym (I think 33 but nothing more than 45)

^^^thats my school idk about other schools but yeah. I’m in band and marching band and stuff so I’m always around a lot of people

DD2 is in the pre-IB track (9th grade) and her honors/pre-IB/AP classes are 14-17 kids. Normal is around 25-34.

In advanced/AP classes, most teachers will say that having 30-35 kids really isn’t a big deal because they don’t generally have any discipline issues to deal with, kids are motivated, get their work done on time, etc. In the general classes where you have a real mixed bag of students, 20-25 is a workable number. Get much smaller than that and it gets difficult to have meaningful discussions, etc.

My kids are in a private college prep PK3-12 school. My younger kids are in 8th and 11th grade and my oldest is a freshman in college. My kids classes vary from 10-20 kids with a few exceptions (band, orchestra). Most are between 15-20.
