I am so, so sorry you are hurting. It is so hard, but you are still the incredible, special person who earned this nomination.
I don’t know if words from a stranger can help lift your spirits, but let me try …
I am of the understanding that each high school is only allowed one or two nominees for the Nutmeg.
Each school nominates their BEST 1 or 2 students.
You have been grouped with the CT students who are viewed by the high schools they attend as THE VERY BEST & THE VERY BRIGHTEST.
So, that is YOU: a member of THE BEST AND THE BRIGHTEST.
It is a really hard task, an impossible task, to pick the ‘best’ 15 people from a group of THE BEST AND THE BRIGHTEST students … and it becomes, to some degree, a game of chance…you are all so very impressive–it is hard to pick stand outs from a group of stand outs. It is just very difficult.
You guys didn’t get lucky this time, but you are one of the Best and the Brightest-and there will be other opportunities. I promise you-keep doing what you are doing.
The point is to be in the special group of kids who will mold our world: the group who cares, and studies, and works hard and is good to people. And you are in that group.
You were nominated for the Nutmeg because you are a truly outstanding person. That fact has not changed just because you are not interviewing for this scholarship. You are one of the best and the brightest, you are our future, and your impact on our world is what matters.
Hang in there. This will be a bump in your road one day.
Hi, I hope I may pester you again!
(from an anxious mom to a mom who has been through this!)
I gather your child is a Nutmeg Scholar - honestly, this was my child’s strong hope – so I am so very happy for you and your child; it is such a great opportunity and wonderful savings!
Since we are still somewhat early in application process, we are trying to reassess and find possible weaknesses/areas to improve with other applications.
I was just reviewing Uconn info, and noticed the following rule regarding merit-based admissions scholarship awards: "Students are eligible to receive a single merit-based admissions scholarship award. Awarding of multiple merit-based admissions scholarships is not permitted."
I am wondering if you guys are aware of any Nutmeg Scholars who would also have qualified for the Presidential Scholarship (Val or Sal)? Or, are they separated?
Thanks in advance for any info you may be able to share.
It does help so much to hear from someone who has been through it!!
Not pestering at all. I remember the stress of this whole thing. Have they definitely made the Nutmeg interview calls already? Yes my child is a Nutmeg Scholar and was also Val. Im not aware of the mechanics of it all honestly, but once we accepted the Nutmeg everything else fell by the wayside. Have you looked into the Stamps Scholarship? Its my understanding that is also quite nice. Im not sure if that is a separate process, or if students are considered as part of the application process.
Thank you again. That is helpful.
I was wondering if Val was working against him!
I was told all calls had successfully been made for interviews, but that final decisions to everyone would be sent sometime in Jan or Feb. (For some reason they are not allowed to directly tell you that you were not selected.)
I believe it is only the Nutmeg and Day of Pride Scholars who are considered for the Stamps.
I think we got our hopes up too high bc of counselor’s input, and we were thinking he would soon be finished. He had decided that if he received the Nutmeg or Stamps, he was happy to go to Uconn.
Now, he has a lot more to think about… (and I was selfishly wanting this so he would still be close to home-lol)
Thank you so much, and best to you and your family!
Im sorry your son didnt get an interview but he sounds very accomplished and Im sure will end up where he is supposed to attend! Im a big believer in everything working out in the end regarding college selection. The kids all seem to “find their people” and have a good experience. Thank you for the well wishes and best of luck to you and your family through the rest of the process.
