NW Economics/MMSS/Kellogg

Hey,

I'm looking at applying to NW regular decision and I'm getting really confused by all these different options for someone interested in economics/business. So, I get that NW doesn't offer undergrad business per se, but economics at Weinberg School of Arts and Science is available.

So would I apply there as a HS senior, then in my freshman year apply to the Kellogg Certificate for undergrads. Then after 4 years I'd graduate as a economics major from NW but i'd also have this degree?

And the other option is to combine the above with the MMSS program which can be entered as a HS senior, or college freshman?

Thanks!

I’m an Econ major and currently doing the Kellogg program.

If you’re very good at math (and I do mean very good), then consider applying for MMSS as a senior in HS. You can also apply as a freshman, but it’s probably better to get in as a freshman and start from there.

As for the Kellogg program - you actually apply as a sophomore (or junior) to begin the following year. It’s also very quantitative focused, just maybe not as much so as MMSS. They basically only look at your grades in the pre-req classes (read more about those online) to determine admission, so if you don’t feel that you’re that strong in math, doing MMSS certainly won’t help you because your grades in those classes will be taken into account for the admissions process into Kellogg. If you are very strong with math, MMSS should be absolutely fine.

The other big business program is Business Institutions (BIP), which is considered a minor. I believe it is the most popular minor at NU, and it is not even close the level of math that MMSS or Kellogg (or even Econ) requires. So there’s another option if math isn’t your forte. But again, if it is, applying for MMSS will probably be fine.

Just as a side note, I’m doing an Econ and Math double major (not MMSS), and had no problem getting into Kellogg. So it’s certainly not that MMSS is a requirement of any sort.

It’s called Northwestern University, not North Western University, so please make a note.
Good luck with your applications!

@cavs, thanks for the help! I’m pretty decent at maths, but I think if i get in I’ll just stick with economics in my freshman year and then look at kellogg and maybe MMSS.
