I know a lot of us are perfectly content to be home, inside and often not even awake at midnight - yay us! .
But that doesn’t mean you might still have an activity or special drink or dessert in the next couple of days. Also there are usually some big games that might have special snacks on tap.
Whatcha planning? Big or small plans/ideas - all count!
Home plans. We’re making prime (actually choice) rib, Yorkshire pudding, and creamed corn - all old Lawry’s recipes. Store purchased duck pate and desserts. We’ll watch the NYC ball drop (which will be 9:00 our time, so followed by dessert and Prosecco). At midnight, son will livestream the Seattle Space Needle show from his window - fireworks and drones!
We always have surf and turf on NYE. Well, H has surf and turf, but I just have the surf (fresh lobster). Rest of the meal includes baked potatoes, roasted asparagus and a steamed artichoke for H.
NYD is a totally couch potato day where H and my kids watch football all day and I read a book, while occasionally glancing up if a game is especially exciting. Rather than a meal, H makes Old Bay wings, along with a variety of appetizers my kids choose (homemade guacamole/queso and chips, pigs in a blanket, chips/veggies and French onion dip).
Older son’s birthday is 1/4. H and I typically start a post-holiday cleanse/healthy diet the next day.
Celebrating with a group of friends for the first time since 2019. Before that, we had spent 30 years celebrating NYs Eve and Day together. Looking forward to seeing them tonight.
We are having a Mexican themed dinner. I offered to bring flan, but the hosts can’t stand it…so I’m bringing a bumble berry pie (three berries and apple…delicious) with vanilla bean ice cream.
We and our friends are going to a wine tasting at a little shop in the Old Port in Portland, and then we’ll go to their house and make pizza. They are early birds, so we’ll come home and ring in the New Year by ourselves.
We are homebodies, but we’re plan to make crab meat appetizers (a family favorite), homemade Philadelphia rolls, and order pizza. D25 and I considered making chocolate Oreo cheesecake but we just might get a slice from the Cheesecake Factory instead because the two of us don’t need a whole cheesecake, it’s a lot of effort, and we are currently packing up our kitchen for a kitchen remodel.
We are homebodies. My son will be out with friends but my husband, daughter and I will watch movies. I’m going to experiment with some appetizer-type foods to use up some of the leftovers we have from the past week + some puff pastry I’ve got in the freezer – mini ham/cheese quiches, potato dumplings, meatballs, etc.
This will be the first year in over a couple of decades where it’s just H and I at home. Years before we’ve had one or more kids/wives with us. Our tradition since the kids were young has been playing various games together after supper until about 15 minutes before midnight. Then we turn on the TV to Times Square and watch the ball drop while drinking bubbly (drink can vary).
After 5-10 minutes we all sit around our Christmas tree and discuss everything significant that has happened over the past year, then we discuss what we want to or think will happen in the new year. Last year we even polled predictions (didn’t do too well on that!).
I’m a bit wistful wishing for those days to be here again, but this year each kid is either at their own place or with the other side of the family, so it will be just H and I - probably playing Yahtzee and then drinking Egg Nog instead of bubbly - but still keeping “our” tradition alive, albeit without a lot of camaraderie we both love.
We’ve never been interested in going to events for New Year’s eve.
Meals vary. This year it’s rack of lamb with marinated mushrooms, then sweet potatoes and peas for sides and pomegranate for dessert. I picked it yesterday…
Went to a bowl game and husband’s team won, so will be a fun rest of the weekend :).
May head to local event, or hang out on our rental’s rooftop to listen from a couple blocks away (my preference).
We are staying in as mentioned earlier. I wanted crab legs but didn’t want to go to Costco so settled for thawing some walleye from the freezer - still seafood! I’ll make walleye “tots” (the only way H will eat them) and then I put together this decadent mushroom casserole that is rich but delicious. Salad. And leftover holiday desserts to try and clear my freezers!
We do traditional Southern New Years Day food. A friend has hosted brunch for decades now, but can’t do it this year. We used to do a big NYE party together of a bunch of old college friends, but as we got older we became more interested in brunch and less interested in NYE partying. I’ve got my collards and black-eyed peas and grits (always have grits on hand). I would do homemade biscuits, but I have a thing of refrigerated crescent rolls I bought in a holiday food buying frenzy and didn’t use yet so I think I’ll bake those to get rid of them. Not sure why I bought them. Not something I typically buy. Might do some frozen vegan Italian sausage I picked up on a whim. Probably some scrambled eggs. The traditional brunch menu includes Hoppin’ John, but I might just do plain black eyed peas unless someone clamors for Hoppin’ John. I’m kinda starched out at this point.
For NYE I’m being a designated driver for my 21 yr old that lives in the neighboring town and will await the text requesting pick up. Otherwise we’ll just be chillin’ at home.
We have decided to wake up super early and drive to Houston to see family for the day. There will be about two dozen of us. We don’t feel like spending the night either tonight or tomorrow, just doing a day trip. We haven’t all been together since before Covid.
Spent the afternoon watching UConn basketball with ds 20 and 22. They’re headed out with friends now, so we will be homebodies, as usual. Something on Britbox and a nice glass of wine is all we need.
I’ve never been a big NYE person - always seems that restaurants etc. are overpriced and there is a feeling of forced gaiety. So we’ll be home - ordered in from a favorite restaurant (H picked it up earlier), have champagne cooling in the fridge, will watch some football, and then channel surf (may end up on CNN) to watch the ball drop.
We’ll be at home, the fire on, something on the tv.
There is cheese and whatever left from Christmas, plus the makings for pigs in a blanket. A fridge full of wine and maybe a cocktail or two.
Tomorrow will be another low-key day. Maybe H will throw together pizza dough & we can start the year off right. (The Ooni is the best thing ever.) Otherwise, it will be whatever is in the freezer put together with fresh veg and salad.
Last year I had my first big NYE party. It stressed me out and I was so tired getting ready for it after Christmas, that I said it was my one and done. Plus it cost an arm and a leg.
In my PJ’s tonight, DH watching the games and I’ll be in bed by 10. Made a great Chicken Parmesan for dinner.
