Bloody Mary?
We brought deviled eggs to a house party. They were a hit. As is often the case here in CO (at least with us older folk), the champagne toast was at 10pm when we watched the ball come down in NYC
It was a bit more trouble than usual making them because I had a devil of a time (ha, no pun intended) peeling the eggs - they were a mess. I had to use new eggs, perhaps very new due to the egg shortage… and maybe that’s why my normal method didn’t work as well. So I bought another dozen and tried the Instapot method. That worked better, perhaps because that time I did an ice bath instead of the usual cold weather. As you can imagine, we’ll be doing a lot of hard boiled eggs and egg salad at my house this week.
I’ve gone with a Darlington. Gin, dry vermouth, calvados, blue curaçao, lemon juice, and simple syrup. It’s a beautiful Kraken blue
Here to report our day trip to Houston to surprise the family was a big hit! We stopped and picked up two dozen kolaches on the way, and every single one was eaten. We left before dinner, but they were having chateaubriand. YUM!
We have not gone out in years but I was feeling a little hemmed in and boring this NYE and was able to get a reservation at a Spanish restaurant nearby. I suggested we go early and have tapas and sangria. We had a 6pm reservation and we were back on the couch by 8! But it was nice to put on an outfit and leave the house for a bit. I had been very put off by the whole NYE, prix fixe, everything super expensive trend - am wondering if Covid did away with that?
I know a lot of people - including 2 of my kids who went dined someplace special the night BEFORE NY Eve and then stayed in cooking a fun item at home on NYE (pirogies!) The third kid went out with her roommate NYE but they got an early reservation and also were home 8ish and chose a restaurant they could walk to to not have to deal with cars/crazy drivers.
Went to a house party NYE where we dined on sausages and lentils, an Italian tradition for a good new year. First time since 2019 so was very special to get back together. NY day went to the gym and briefly to a nearby open house and prepared macaroni and gravy, with meatballs and sausage for the family - tradition for us. Was a beautiful day here, so had a nice walk. Nice to have the day off today but will be doing some work and then taking down the holiday décor, along with two zooms later: family and then friends.
When the kids were small, the tradition was to go out for dinner Dec 30th to avoid crowds and expense of NYE. My mother did babysitting as part of our Christmas gift.
For my job the last 15 years at work, NYE was an “all hands on deck” affair until midnight. Initially it was done all on site until midnight (or NY midnight, then log in from home), with more ability over time to do some of the holiday hours from home. It was a true joy to be retired this year, with Covid risk lower than last 2 years. We could do whatever we wanted on NYE - was a joy to be able to go to a party.
Missed this thread - not online for a few days. We’ve hosted a new years eve party at our house for the past 25+ years, skipping only a year or two. So, we renewed the party again this year after a gap of two years thanks to Covid. Not many “kids” this year, but the parents all came. Theme for food was “souper salad” with some finger sandwiches and appetizers. Three different soups, with all the fixings and about four different kinds of salads. Went over very well - everyone contributes.
As usual, we ate, sang karaoke, played games until about 11.45 or so and then watched the ball drop in NY with champagne and sparkling apple cider. Folks stayed until about 2.30 playing games and talking.
New Years day was quiet - finished cleaning, putting away all the dishes, taking down the tree and mantle decor, packing away everything until next year.
2:30am - you may get the prize for most spunk after midnight!
Definitely the winner!
Our guests left at about 12:30 after watching the drone flop, and we stayed up just long enough to toast to the Honolulu new year. Then we quickly fell asleep.
Usually, guests depart around 1am. I think the fact that we hadn’t done this in a couple of years led to folks staying longer. I sense that we are all appreciating the fact that we can be together, sharing and talking a little bit more these days!!
