NY Eve/Day Food

Whatcha making/baking/eating tonight and/or tomorrow?

We don’t make a big deal out of either but I was craving some crab legs. Went to the small fru fru grocery store cause I didn’t want to tackle a big box or Costco. Only crab legs they had were $65/package! My H won’t eat them so that seemed silly.

Compromised with a pork loin boneless roast which H will love, local sauerkraut which I will love, and some crab sushi that I can have all to myself! I’ll also roast some potatoes and broccoli and maybe do some stuffed mushrooms.

One meal, two day feast.

I am making a couple of soups – homemade chicken noodle and a tortellini gazpacho – for New Year’s Day. I will take some to my sister when I visit her tomorrow.

I will also make some hoppin’ john for myself to eat on New Year’s Day – for good luck in the New Year! (The rest of the family is not big on beans and rice.)

Grilling steaks, roasting sweet potatoes and brussel sprouts , brownies for dessert. Tomorrow I will be making a big pot of soup.

Happy NY, everyone!

Pork and sauerkraut is the tradition here in PA that we happily have added to our routine. Neither H nor I grew up with it, but it’s delicious.

We add potatoes and green/yellow beans to ours in the slow cooker New Year’s Eve, then by the time we get up on New Year’s Day it’s ready to eat.

H grew up with black-eyed peas as a tradition. He sticks with it. I eat some, but they’re certainly not my favorite bean flavor.

We don’t have a New Year’s Eve tradition - just New Year’s Day. Tonight everyone will just be snacking as they want while we play our board games.

I am having a colonoscopy on Monday, so we are eating pretty basic food tonight. We’ll have salmon & white rice (which I normally never cook - it’s always brown rice in my kitchen). I eat really well, with tons of fiber in my diet. Even a few days without my typical oatmeal, fruits, vegetables and greens is rough for me. But I had an Asiago bagel this morning, which was a real treat!

Best of luck with the procedure! (I’ve had two myself.)

In New England, eating Chinese food is a tradition on NYE. We are going to the mother of all restaurants, the Kowloon, just outside Boston.

It’s my second (can’t believe how quickly 10 years flies). I hate the prep, but I am participating in a study that may one day allow a blood test to replace a screening colonoscopy. I will give a toast to science as we enter 2022!

We always do seafood on NYD. Tomorrow is ribeye, lobster tails, crab legs, and sides. I still need to go get dessert.

Tonight is take out.

H bought shrimp for shrimp cocktail. Other than that - no idea.

Making the traditional dumplings with meat and onions filling in our fabulous steam oven. This is the time of the year when both the oven and KitchenAid mixer get a lot of use.

I would be fine with shrimp cocktail and maybe some cheese - and sparkling wine. But my Mr. wants the dumplings!

We normally stay home on NYE and have steak and lobster. That was the plan again yesterday but after two weeks of lots of baking and cooking big meals, we decided last night that we don’t feel like another big, rich meal. Our boys want to watch football so we will just be doing a bunch of apps (chicken wings, chips and guacamole, etc).

H picked up a big center cut pork loin roast yesterday that was on sale so that will be dinner tomorrow. We don’t do anything traditional on NYD.

Just a side note, H has his scheduled for the 10th and is likely in the same study! He gets $250 for participating I believe.

Back to regularly scheduled programming… his diet doesn’t need to change just yet.

We bought the Costco big box of frozen king crab legs (~$350) to split between Christmas Eve dinner with D & her boyfriend and a small NYE gathering we had planned for tonight. First moved NYE to a daytime event outside, but weather didn’t cooperate so we cancelled it. Glad it’s frozen, but it takes up too much real estate in our freezer. I’m looking forward to pulling a leg or two out for fancy midweek dinners in January.

My southern family always made black-eyed peas on the first for good luck. Do ya’ll in the south do that too … or something else?

I am having lobster tails for New Year’s Eve. I just ordered a dozen oysters and clams for tomorrow. I guess I am going to have a seafood tower for New Year’s Day.
D1 said they are having Pig and Khao meal kit
D2 is making a steak dinner
We are all staying home to watch the ball drop.
Here is hoping for a happy and healthy year.

I can’t convince my family to celebrate Hogmanay Scottish-style with black bun and haggis, along with swinging and hurling balls of flame for entertainment— so we are having chili and cornbread with football for entertainment instead. :woman_shrugging:t2:

Yep, here in Texas we need the black-eyed peas for good luck. I buy the canned ones with jalepeno and make “hoppin’ john”, which is essentially rice and beans but with lots of bacon and then we add Louisiana hot sauce. I grew up hating black-eyed peas but turns out I just need them spicy and with bacon!
