I only drink alcohol sometimes when we travel or the rare times when I’m at some event and it’s expected. But then it’s far more likely to be a Coconut Mojito or Pina Colada than wine. I’ve finally come to the conclusion I really don’t like wine, so why bother? H and I added more into our lives when it was supposed to be good for us, but neither of us stuck with it for long even then. He still prefers wine over mixed drinks when we’re out on those trips though.
I’ll take my wine as red or black grapes - love those and buy them often.
American wines tend to be higher in alcohol than their European counterparts. That extra alcohol might not seem like much, but when you look at the numbers from a different perspective, wine with 16 percent alcohol content has about 20% more alcohol than wine with 13 percent alcohol content. That is the reason I like German Riesling because most have alcohol under 10%, while US Riesling can have as much as 14 (!!) % alcohol.
Also, sulfites can be a problem for some people, but those would be likely present in many wines regardless of their place of origin. Europe just doesn’t require their disclosure, unlike the US.
For folks who are allergic to sulfites (and histamines), there is a product called Wine Wands. It is a harmless ion exchange resin that apparently selectively removes those suckers from wine without altering the taste.
We’ve only tried Sovi. It tastes like a really poor wine. Thin. Some of the non-alchoholic IPAs aren’t bad. We have a can of Sovi white sparkling that we haven’t tried yet. I think it might work better.
My beer drinking family members are quite happy with some of the nonalcoholic beers (I think Athletic Brewery is their choice) but I have not found any non-a wine that tastes, or especially, feels, like wine. I would love to find that. Any I’ve tried are thin and taste more like juice.
Answering you again, we had the Sovi sparkling white tonight. It’s better than either of their reds, but it’s still quite disappointing. It doesn’t stay fizzy very long and it’s a little too tart. Both my DIL and I thought it could be sweeter (and we like dry wine!), but it needed more fruitiness like a rosé.
