NY Times: The Largest Source of Stolen Guns? Parked Cars

Couldn’t read the article but will say that there have been more reports in our area of guns stolen from cars and trucks parked outside homes. Vehicle break-ins at night have increased and I’ve seen multiple posts about this, including one last month from a parent whose grown son left a gun in an unlocked truck overnight. Police reports here don’t give house numbers but do state something like “the 300 block of Yellowhammer Dr.” and mention weapons stolen.

We live in a pretty safe town, but I still persuaded my husband to park his truck behind our 6 ft privacy fence (there’s a double gate on the driveway) since he can’t fit it into our garage which still holds unpacked bins and boxes. We definitely don’t keep a gun in our vehicles, but theft of catalytic converters is also on the rise even in so-called “nice” areas.

Sometimes I wonder if we live in the same place. We’ve had the same kind of reports over the last year or so. I can’t imagine leaving our cars unlocked, let alone a one with a gun inside. Car break-ins have long been an issue in our city though. Mine was broken into once long ago in our old neighborhood.

Even when locked, cars are not that hard for thieves to get into.

Guns are attractive enough theft targets that high security storage (that is much higher security than cars or houses) is available.

For sure. Here they just smash windows. (Like mine) we taught the kids long ago never ever leave anything in the car (electronics).
