This is fantastic—thank you for sharing

Thanks for sharing this. I wouldn’t have thought it was particularly newsworthy though, as this is the treatment I received for my stroke in October 2008. At the time my insurance company considered it experimental, and refused payment.

But I sure was fortunate to be taken to a facility that was able to do it. I hate to think about what might have been.

My recovery has been remarkable, thanks to quick intervention and intense rehabilitation. At age 65, running 5 miles or spending 45 minutes on the rowing machine is easy for me. In fact, I’m in better physical condition than most people my age. My only noticeable deficit is in my fine motor skills in my dominant hand; my handwriting and chopstick skills have gone downhill.

I haven’t fully recovered, and never will, but I’m doing pretty well.

IMO, what is most misunderstood about stroke survivors is that their cognitive and intellectual abilities are largely unaffected by the stroke.

Wow - the insurance company wouldn’t pay? I assume that it would have cost them more had you not recovered so well.

Call me jaded, but I think they would have preferred I just die before the ambulance arrived. Or on the table. But saving and prolonging my life? Not in their financial interest.

Sadly, I think you’re right.
