We are also looking as to whether any NYC schools allow for a Spring start.
She’s graduated high school already but had to take a year + off due to medical issues. She hasn’t taken any classes so is still concerned a freshman admit, but would really like to get started as soon as possible. We’ve looked into community college, but are under the impression that any course work would then take her out of Freshman category and into Transfer student category, which isn’t necessarily bad, but might be a disadvantage later on (not even sure that’s an accurate assumption, frankly!)
She is not on the typical college start path, so any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. She’s had a real rough go of things the past 5 years and is finally healthy. She’s excited to be well enough to get going on this next phase of life.
Her gap+ year had to focus extensively on health matters. She’s realistic that most schools might not look on that favorably. All can be explained but hers was definitely not the dreamy gap year one imagines a student experiencing post HS graduation.
Check out Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. Great for Art or Art History. Very attractive green campus in heart of Clinton Hill neighborhood. Not too big. My daughter is having a great freshman experience there (after a non-conventional path also.)
Thank you everyone! Will check out Pratt too. We visited Parsons and I thought it was stunning, but she loved FIT more, for some reason.
NYU has a ‘visiting student’ option for Spring 2020 or Summer 2020. FITNY has many on-line classes, as well as evening and weekend courses.
Would she be able to take anything like this after applying to schools for FALL2020? just to get started? or do you think doing so would jeopardize her ‘Freshman’ status?
I’m assuming it would. She’s just so darn excited about moving on with life and wants to be in NYC so badly taking classes and all, that’d we’re trying to form some sort of way for her to do so without having to wait until Fall to get going.
We’re both very appreciative of your suggestions, and gracious compassion towards her situation.
Some schools do allow some after-hs-grad credits to be taken and for the student to still be a freshman, but every school is different and you don’t want to screw up by taking one or two. I think it would be best to get into a school and then ask if taking a few credits is allowed. It is mostly a financial aid thing to still be considered a freshman, but since you don’t need FA it may not matter that much.
It’s getting awfully close for a spring start as a full degree seeking student.
Thank you. Yes, I agree that one or two classes wouldn’t be worth jeopardizing anything. FITNY said she could take online classes after applying but maybe they meant non credit courses.
I agree that it’s getting down to the wire figuring it all out. Not an ideal scenario by any means, but we are trying to make the best of her situation and staying positive that something will work out.
School of Visual Arts may not be the best choice if she is not yet sure what she wants to do, as applicants to SVA apply to a specific program. I’m not sure about all of the other arts schools in NYC, but many art schools do require a specific area of focus from the start. If she were willing to consider Boston, the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, attached to Tufts, is one where you can study across different fields.
Adding to my post above…
However, the deadline to apply to MMC for spring semester was Dec. 1. This is likely to be an issue for your D at most colleges at this point in December for spring admissions.
Be aware that some of these schools for fine arts majors, requires a portfolio for admission, and so a more liberal arts focused school that has studio art is a better option (such as Sarah Lawrence outside the city).
