Air New Zealand has been offering its skycouch product since 2011…
@mtmind Thank you very much. This actually sounds worth exploring…for long flights. Better than coach one seat for sure.
We splurged for business seats when we flew HNL to Narita and found the lie flat seats a very nice option. H was able to take a nap on the flight to Japan and sleep on the way back. I caught a short nap on my way back to Honolulu. It was nice not to have people breathing down your neck in this era of so many viruses and COVID. It did cost quite a bit more than coach but we felt it was well worth it.
The lie flat seats are really comfortable and private, especially on longer flights like that - but so pricey – even when compared with non lie flat first. It’s hard to say it’s worth it, but oh, are they nice compared to the alternative!
According to this article it only couple of airlines that offer it even though it’s a nice option it’s not available to most travelers
The lay flat seats really are worth the money. And, if you are traveling for leisure, you can put a search on those flights to get best price. I’ve been able to find non-stop transatlantic and transpacific flights in business lay flat for under $3k RT over the past year (leaving from ORD).
If you are willing to deal with a stop and are flexible, you can find flights under $2k.
Even on those few airlines that offer such an option, it’s highly dependent on how many seats in economy are sold. The airlines would only sell you this option when many seats (probably more than half) in the economy cabin on a particular flight are unsold.
For those who don’t have the fortune to fly in business or first class on a long-haul transoceanic flight, Air New Zealand is going to launch this fall a new type of economy class with bunk beds:
Other airlines may follow if the concept proves to be successful.
