NYU Costs seem out of control--$71K

NYU’s tuition increases seem out of control. Maybe it’s because they’re trying to expand all over lower Manhattan? Maybe it’s because they’re trying to expand all over the world? How sustainable is that, exactly?

Maybe that’s why the tuition keeps climbing through the roof!

I’m not sure of the cause, but NYU is on the bottom of my list for my child, unless he/she studies at a specific program that NYU has or a specific professor as a mentor. For general education–no way. Not on your life.

I feel like it’s a public school with a private school sticker price–oh wait. Private school prices would be a discount from NYU’s actual sticker price. If it were my child who wanted to study in NYC, I’d say: Do not go into debt for NYU. It’s not worth it. CUNY colleges are cheap and they have all that a person needs: engineering; fashion; art; the downtown NYC scene. Students from NYC’s world-class best high schools find amazing educations at CUNY schools. This year in my child’s specialized high school with a graduating class of ~700, only one ONE is attending NYU. It’s just too expensive for what it offers.

(Specialized high schools in NYC are the top high schools. Over the decades they’ve produced many Nobel Prize winners, famous designers like Isaac Mizrahi, musicians, performers like Al Pacino and Ansel Elgort, etc.)

CUNY $6000 per year plus living expenses vs. NYU’s now $70+thousand a year.

So your child wants to go to college in NYC? Let her spend one year in NYC working and gaining residency and then attend a CUNY school for one tenth of the price and an equal education and access to jobs and connections as NYU.
