I know my GPA is a little bit low for NYU. My mother was dealing with an alcohol dependency my freshman year and went to an inpatient rehabilitation facility to receive help the summer between my freshman and sophomore years. My family has continued to actively work recovery since then. There is a clear correlation with my grades, and a consistent improvement of my GPA from year to year. I believe that my dedication to the activities I have been involved with will be one of my strongest points, as well as my unique story as growing up not only as a minority in the city I live in, but within my entire family and extended family! NYU is my first choice to study journalism and communications, but I would be happy attending Fordham, as well as some of the other universities in the area.

I really appreciate any feedback. If you took the time to read through this, thank you so much you’re helping me a lot!

You cannot study both journalism and communications at NYU as they are in different schools and journalism requires a double major within CAS (which communications is not).

Looking only at schools in NYC is very short-sighted, as they are all VERY different from each other, and you’re ignoring some of the best journalism programs in the country (like Mizzou)

To address your first comment, at Fordham, there is no “Journalism” Major, I would have to study at the school of communications. When I said it’s a great location to study both I meant that regardless of the school I end up at, I could have great resources available to me to succeed in my field.
I am not “only looking at schools in NYC”, on my list as of now are also universities from several other states… BU, Drexel, Penn State, and American just to name a few! I just wanted to see what my chances at these two specific schools were, based on my high school activity! Thank you for your advice though I’ll check out Mizzou as well.

You have a shot, definitely; I’d say Fordham might be more impressed by your unusual personal narrative, and you have geographic diversity working in your favor. If you want to be in NYC, give Pace a try. You might qualify for their Honors College, which comes with a nice scholarship and some other perks. Although they do not have as strong a liberal arts reputation, they offer excellent internship opportunities. You could also give Eugene Lang/New School a try. You will probably get in, but the financial side might be a problem.
