NYU Liberal Studies Program

^
So do you think NYU wants a student less or more if they notified them early and gave them a campus option?

they notified them early and gave them a campus option because people who have the option need more time to see if they will actually accept it so they can plan accordingly

I don’t agree with the idea that “LSP students wouldn’t have gotten in to NYU if it wasn’t for LSP” because frankly, I got accepted into the program and I have strong EC’s, a 93.8 unweighted average at a nationally ranked competitive high school, and a 2050 sat. I think they really do try to find students who fit their description of the program. My essays talked a lot about cultural stereotypes, and i put undecided as my major, and all this seems pretty fitting of LSP. I wasn’t exactly happy about going into LSP, but honestly I do have a feeling that it would work out for the better. Frankly, I would choose wes over lsp, but its completely up to you!

From an article exlpaining the program:
NYU President John Sexton described it as a “second chance program” for promising students who did not meet all of the Admissions Office’s academic requirements.

Any LSPers want to post their stats?

Also, anyone know how NYU decides what campuses to offer to what students? I would only want to do it if I was going to be at the NY campus, not any of the international campuses…

@Correkid,
My stats were:
3.9 weighted GPA (3.6 unweighted),
2000 SAT one sitting–just a little higher superscored,
32 ACT, with a 36 in reading and a 34 in writing (which is why I like the writing intensiveness of LSP)–my weakness was science
AP scores werent too good: 3’s mostly, some 4’s, and some 2’s :(

Extracurriculars:
Varsity golf 3 years
Varsity track 2 years
300+ community service
NHS
NAHS president
Science club founder
Leadership in Campus Ministry
Speedskating State Champion (but that was freshman year) - speedskated for 4 years.
Figureskating (11 years competitively)

I think my strengths were my test scores and extracurriculars. My GPA was very far from perfect. I actually applied directly to LSP because it was what I wanted.

@figurespeed94 What campus did you study at? What options were you given? I know there is a section on the NYU supplement that asks which portals you want to be considered for, so if I only check NYC, will they only offer NYC and not the international sites?

Anyone have any answers regarding LSP in NYC and international sites? Who do they offer NYC to??? I wouldn’t want to be at an international site so I really want to know how they decide who is offered the NYC campus

When you fill out you application they ask to some extent “IF you where placed in LSP rank the following 5 places in order of preference.” Then later on in March if you get put in LSP you have to actually decide which campus to enter from. Most of the time NYU won’t let you enter from certain cites even if it was your first choice due to number of people, diversity, ect. It’ll be a little webpage and the places you can enter from will be listed. I was lucky enough to have Paris as my first choice and have it as an option.

Can you get placed into LSP if you are planning on majoring in journalism, EDI?

My stats:

GPA: 3.69/4.3 weighted. (School doesn’t rank)
Superscored SAT: 2150 (680CR, 700M, 770W, 8 essay)
SAT IIs: Math 1 - 670
ACT: 31 Composite, 33 English, 27 Math (bleh :stuck_out_tongue: ), 32 Reading, 30 Science, and 8 Writing.
APs: AP Bio - 3, AP Lang - 3. Senior year I took Psych, Lit, and Stats (got a 4, 4, and 3 respectively)

Intended Major/Field of Study: Psychology

Work Experience: Since October 2009, I have been working as a legal assistant to a lawyer who wrote me a letter of recommendation.

Community Service: 60 hours of community service at local library during summer before sophomore year.

My High School: Very competitive public high school in northern NJ. Well ranked.

Extracurriculars: Member and leader of a few clubs. Did sports during freshman year. Used to work for my school newspaper during my freshman year and on the yearbook staff senior year.

Legacy: None.

Oh! and I’m spending my freshman year in Paris  They emailed me a month before the official acceptances were sent that I had been accepted and placed in LSP and that I should choose where I want to spend my freshman year (NY, Paris, Shanghai, Florence, or London).
And I had applied for CAS but was placed in LSP.

@helloparis wondering the same thing. I think that they can do that. Do you know how competitive the journalism applicant pool is? I’m not too worried, I have tons of accolades and work experience, but I still want to know.

@cricket123 what was your first choice as far as sites go? Do you know if all american students are given the NY campus as an option? Did you apply RD or ED?

It’s ran by 16 current LSP students! They’re posting helpful information and answering every question you have! :)

would it help if you applied straight to the Liberal Studies program instead knowing that some of your scores are a bit weaker than others? Or is it better to apply to the school you want to go to (CAS for me), get rejected, but get accepted to LSP? I feel like if i applied straight to LSP i’d “secure” a chance to get in…is that true? please respond!!

Can you transfer out of LSP after freshman year? I know you can automatically after sophomore… but can you APPLY for an internal transfer? (Whereas you do not apply after sophomore year)

Hello, I am a 2017er now and crazy about NYU especially Stern, but to be honest to me I don’t think I can get into stern on RD. So I heard lots of people were put into LSP instead of CAS when they were admitted. SO, I want to know is there any chance I can transfer to Stern from LSP? IS it super hard? PLease help me

@magfri, It really depends on your situation. Halfway into your first semester you will meet with an LS advisor and if you have great interest in a major that will require you to leave LSP a year early you can apply to do so.

(I’m a current LS freshman and a classmate is doing that for Tisch so they need to create a portfolio and send it in next semester.)

@mcrising, From what I have heard, it is very difficult for a student to transfer from LSP to Stern unless they have taken some core courses for a Stern major.

Does anybody know if I can transfer out of LSP before the two years if I want to transfer to a different college? (Not a different NYU school)
