Hello,
I need some advice desperately...
I've narrowed my choices down to NYU and UT Austin (Summer Program) and I'm having a lot of trouble deciding between the two. Like many other students, the issue I'm having is money. Is the NYU education worth what it will cost me and my family? Here's a breakdown:

NYU: I got a total of $15K in scholarships, plus $4K for work study, leaving me to come up with $33k. I want to major in international relations, so NYC is pretty much ideal.

UT Austin: I would have to do the Summer Program and major in Political Science since UT doesn't have an international relations major. However, UT is considerably cheaper...

So which one do I choose?? I hate how expensive NYU is, but I'm worried about getting into a good law school as a UT grad, especially since I didn't apply for plan II or honors... please help!

i was in the same predicament a few weeks ago, and chosoe NYU.
altough i love austin, i think NYU has more prestige and is academically better.

Law schools do not care what college you came from unless it is not a regionally accredited 4-year+ college or it is a foreign college.

How much do your parents make? Do you have loans in which the government pays the interest for you?

Ask your parents how much they could afford for your education per year. Keep in mind that there are other costs considered as well including living expenses (and I am not talking about dorms or textbooks). NYC itself is quite an expensive place compared to some other places I been to. For example, it costs $2 to ride the subway each time or $81 on a monthly subway card. Movie tickets costs around $10-$12 in Manhattan although considerably cheaper outside of Manhattan. Food is awfully expensive everywhere in Manhattan except Chinatown and food stands. Even McDonalds is more expensive in Manhattan than outside of Manhattan. I am not sure about NYU meal plans though.

I never been to Austin so I cannot compare the prices there with NYC.

You may want to find a job in the city if you wish to go to NYU.

On the positive side, NYU does have the program you want while UT Austin does not.

If you are going to law school, you might want to save some money for law school since it is unlikely for graduate students to get financial aid, especially by the government. If you do not have interest-free loans, they will add up at a huge cost to you after you graduate from undergraduate studies, especially if the interests are adjustable ones. This may leave you with less money for law school or investing in your own law firm (if you wish to do so).

Keep in mind that tuition rates can also change for BOTH universities.

Think about the opportunity costs of attending NYU and UT Austin. Is it worth the cost after considering positives and negatives on the short term and long term?

I think you should try appealing for financial aid and searching for non-NYU scholarships.

I recommend that if you can afford two semesters of NYU, try NYU out. Transfer out later if you do not like it or found the costs too high to bear compared to its advantages. Transferring to NYU after going to UT Austin is not a good idea considering the competitiveness at NYU.
