NYU Residence Halls

A large proportion of private messages I've gotten have been related to dorms and residence life. Thus, I figured it might be a good idea to start this thread on residence related topics, so others can also contribute.

1) Is there only one style of dorm for freshman? The room they show you on the tour is a double with a bathroom, is that what all freshman dorms are like?

2) Don't think I'm an alcoholic becuase of this but is NYU really as incredibly strict about their drinking policy as people say. I mean I'm not looking to drink every night or nessecarily at all but someone told me that there is nothing to do unless you are 21 or have a fake ID. Is the social scene really dead to us who are underage?

Thank you so much! You have been a HUGE help to all of us that are interested in going to NYU!

sopranosweet6 - it's NYC! how canthe social scene be dead?
I noticed you applied ED. ED applicants get first choice of dorms. You get to pick any dorm, so you shouldn't be worried about that.

unrealfire- I don't know how it can be dead but thats what I was informed. I mean I like to party. I come from Bergen County, NJ right across from NYC. Its a very rich and lush county and we party hard and parties are huge and I've been infromed that unless you're 21 you can't party at all! I mean I don't want to get sloshed every weekend I just like to be able to dance and meet people and have a good time and I've been informed that's not really the case for us that are underage.

Soprano:

1) Freshmen get to choose between apt style and traditional style dorms. Apartment style has a living room and kitchen, while traditional is simply a studio apt. with a bathroom. Apartment style is more expensive, and farther from campus (15 minute walk instead of 2 minute walk).

2) It's NYC - there is always something to do. You sound like the person who likes clubs - most are 18+, also many people go to hookah bars. If you are looking for a hard party scene though, I suggest a school with more of a notorious frat scene like Lehigh.

Soprano,

Freshman can choose either traditional or apartment style dorms, but most choose traditional since thats where all the other frosh are. The type of dorm room you get depends on the hall, but most are doubles (though rooms range from singles to suites with many people).

Where did you hear this??..its not true. You can drink your a$$ off at NYU (hey I did). There are so many bars in NY and the Greenwich Village area. You can easily get a fake ID, and many bars in NYU area won't even card that hard since they depend on students for business (some bars are known to be NYU bars). Also, you can easily purchase alcohol and bring it into the dorms, we even threw a few keggers (helps to be friendly with the security staff or just plain slick). Not once will any dorm staff check to see if you are 21 when bringing alcohol into dorms. NYU parties hardcore on Thursday night since almost nobody has class on Friday, and every weekend is a 3 day weekend. Trust me, you'll be drinking plenty if you want, and have a chance to engage in various other substance abuse should you choose...one of the best parts of NYU is its debauchary.

Oh, I had NYU friends from Bergen Co. NJ (Alpine and Franklin Lakes)..the house parties there are notoriously awesome.

Good luck.

NYU class of '00

NYU actually changed this around this year and backfired. Due to the suicides NYU attempted to make all freshmen dorms. Third North was to be the only apartment style dorm for freshmen and the traditional dorms (Rubin, Weinstein, Brittany, Goddard, Hayden) too all freshmen. However, NYU miscalculated the incoming freshmen and ended up making in addition to the above, University Hall 2/3 freshmen (floors 1-10) and scattering some freshmen in Palladium and Carlyle (almost all of these freshmen requesting traditional style). I'm not sure what they are going to do next year, but I'm guessing it will be much better.

JWBlue: I LOVE YOU FOR SAYING THAT! I mean I know I'm not accepted to NYU, but hopefully if I am it'll be a great time. I was actually more worried about the party scene than the dorms but I didn't want to come off as an alcoholic right away. You're right by the way, BC house parties are nororiously awesome, especially the ones in Alpine. I mean you have to do something with all of that money. Thanks for the awesome reply!

IHeart: I wasn't aware of this as I haven't lived in NYU dorms since 2000. I wonder why the change, esp. since it was working fine before. I think its possible they might have had an increased yield (ie more accepted frosh than usual decided to attend, leading to a larger class) which overfilled the dorms.

I'm glad you're glad Soprano. You will definately have a great time if you go to NYU, I don't think I was ever bored during my 4 years of college there. Believe it or not, it will even rival Bergen County, NJ house parties. Some well know NYU bars to check out if you are in the area: Josie Woods, Shades of Green, Bar None, Nevada Smiths, and a host of others. These places will be very familiar, almost like second homes if you go to NYU.

Good luck.

i have a friend at NYU; he's taken me out three times when i've come to visit and only once have we been carded for drinks at a club or bar. he told the bouncer i forgot my ID and they let me in. not a problem finding somewhere to party (and drink if you want) in the city.

sopranosweety, why do you keep mentioning how Bergen County is rich and all...it's quite embarrassing to hear that...are you that rich? are we that rich?

jwblue, can freshmen choose Water Street? I heard it's pretty good

KJayson- with all due respect shove it. I'm talking on my behalf not yours so you shouldn't be embarassed. Also, why should anyone be embarassed by living in a rich county, its a fact and you can't get around it so don't ignore it. No, I am faaaar from rich, but that doesn't change the fact that our county is.

Do not think that Bergen county is all that rich...it's quite not true. Only north Bergen towns are slightly above the average but the rest are just..."average" and nevertheless there are towns filled with people in need.

So you party at Alpine houses... what the hell are you talking about? I do party at Alpine houses too with my homies. How come I never saw you? Good for you if you know someone who lives in Alpine and that you live in a supposedly "rich" "county (?)", but do make sure that 'you' fit in.

I am sorry but you sound like an alcoholic, yes. and you do sound very COOL and rich. I want to make friends with you. satisfied?

Do people in Bergen county have huge parties? oh I did not know that, thank you. Maybe I am just not part them.

People, I come from Bergen County New Jersey just across Manhattan. We are rich and we have huge parties. Bergen County house parties are cool and huge and we drink a lot. I am so cool. I want to make friends with you.

Kjayson,

I'm not sure if freshmen can choose Water St....I don't think they can, the dorm is for upper classmen (its almost all sophs who live there).

Trust me, you wouldn't want to live in Water St. your first year, there wouldn't be any other freshmen there, the sophmores would very likely already have their group of friends, and probably not be very interested in meeting more new people. After your freshmen year, Water St. can be a great place to live...its very posh, and some of the rooms have amazing views. Certainly something to consider your sophmore year if you don't mind being 1/2 hr away from campus.

Yes, it's not that i do not know the fact that my county is up there but what the hell do you mean huge Alpine, or county parties? if i were you, i wouldn't say anything regarding this. if you like parties ok, and you can, of course, talk about it here. but...there is this something about your attitude...you are too proud and arrogant. the county is rich but you are not so why don't you zip it?

i laughed so hard when saw your post "have huge house parties" ok...i did not know our parties were huge as you said. Maybe i am just a loser who doesn't know what is going on around me.

if you live in a rich "town", i wouldn't bother posting these. but you are not and you simply proud because you are from a rich "county".

I wouldn't bother posting these if "you" were rich and your "town" was rich and the 2nd in the nation. but you are not and it disgusts me when you say such things so arrogantly.

maybe you are proud but i have to say it again, they are your words but in some occassions people feel this embarrassment...no more like...i pity you.

Bergen County is EXTREMELY wealthy, probably the richest county in the nation, and certainly one of the richest. I have both family and NYU friends from Bergen Co.....its an affluent area...no question about it, whether anyone who lives there realizes or not.

I work on Wall St., its seems every senior i-banker, lawyer, trader, executive I meet that has a family either lives in Bergen or Westchester, with a few Conn. people thrown in. Us younger Wall Streeters live in Manhattan of course.

Anyway, from everything I've seen and known of it, Bergen is wealthy.

Dude, stop insulting me, its just plain rude. Learn a bit of tact and keep nasty comments to yourself, it will make you more popular in the end. Also, don't pity me I wouldn't want you to have stoop to pity such an arrogant, proud, poor person like me. Oh how humble of you!

Also, please don't tell me what I can or can't say or shoulc or shouldn't say. I am entitled to say whatever I would like. And dude, a huge house party means with alot of people what else could it mean?

:) yes i do know that, but i am just disgusted with her words....so arrogant.

I am sorry if i am being very rude, but I too can speak out freely. which huge hardcore parties did you go? I just want to know, maybe I might join you this weekend.

if you don't see the riches in your house, don't say it.

Also, KJayson, I think you're reading too much into my words. I am in no way arrogant, I'm just stating the facts. I mean I live in Bergen County and I see what I see and I'm just stating my opinion.
