Spoke to my D and she gave me these links for you kids. I see the housing one has already been posted so I won't include that one again. These are communities of and for NYU students. They contain a wealth of information. :)

anyone know if there is a dorm that's considered the "jewish" dorm? I suppose I would go there if there was, though I haven't heard about it. it makes sense that there would be some sort of that thing since us jews tend to stay together.
happy to hear anything....

stagedoor, there are many thousands of Jewish students at NYU so there's no single dorm for them. :) When my D was a freshman, she had a Jewish roommate and there were many others on her floor. She was in Weinstein and the dining hall there has a Kosher eatery as well as a weekly Shabbat dinner. There may be other dining halls which do the same, I don't know, but I know that Weinstein definitely does.

Does anyone know anything about Rubin? That one seems fun, it is on fifth avenue. How is the social life there? I just can't seem to get excited about Hayden (which I believe is 7000 something not 9000 for the typical room).

Yeah, I thought about no AC. But really, how hot can it be during the winter. The only times it will really matter is the first month and the last one or two. Plus I am from Hawaii, I can handle heat.

mauiboy, the 2004-2005 rates for Hayden are $9850 for a room in a suite and $7080 for a low cost triple. You can always count on these costs, as well as tuition costs, increasing for next year. It's a given. :)

You will hear that each and every freshman dorm is the best, has the best feeling of community, is the most social, etc. This is something that is going to vary room by room, suite by suite, floor by floor, and most especially year by year. What may be great this year, could possibly change next. The point is, the individuals living there are going to make or break your experience, not the dorm itself, so much.

The best thing to do is to set your priorities as to what is important to you. Do you want standard dorm or apartment style? Do you want a kitchen so you can cook all your own meals? Convenient WSP location? A dorm with a dining hall so you don't have to go outside for meals? Air-conditioning? Once you determine those things, then you can narrow it down and specify your top choice.

I've heard mixed things about the dorms. I will be a Musical Theatre major or at least a Drama major and I read in my catalogue that Weinstein has music rooms. I also probably request a triple for costs, which is the best one for that? What's the difference between food courts and dining rooms and dining halls? Do all provide food? I would like an exercise room and game room also, and I heard Weinstein has that.

With my acceptance letter, I recieved a catalogue and it never said anything about suites having common rooms, just kitchens, although that would be great! 3rd North sounds great but it's farther from campus, right? I would like a suite better.

For what I want, which would be the best for me?

And yeah, are they clean? Any bugs, etc? Bathroom problems?

And in my catalogue, it has UHall as a choice.

As for the questin on whether Uhall will be a freshmen dorm next year it will be. The admissions office and the housing office are searate entities and you should all have UHall as a choic for housing next year. Just for reference the website is usually out of date so pulling all of your info from off of their is going to give you out dated information.

I used to dorm at Third North. Third North has one piano room...gets booked sometimes. But if you're rooming at Weinstein, you can always walk over to the new music center and play piano there. There are 50 new rooms.

I sent in my deposit for the dorm and tuition a few weeks ago, but I still havent received anything back. Did anyone else get anything? Or are they not sending stuff out yet? I'm worried that maybe they didnt receive the deposit =/
Also, how much is Uhall? Are there low cost triples anywhere else besides Rubin and Hayden?

Rubin is a bit further than Weinstein. You'll have to walk for 15 mins to campus. It's older than Weinstein, Third North , etc. It's probably the same as Britney (not that rowdy) and Hayden.

They are really really cramped compared to other room, its not worth it unless money is a very serious issue. For a difference of less than 2K a year, I'd go with a standard room, the low cost triples are way too cramped, it will feel like a dorm at other colleges and not NYU, which in general is known for spacious dorm accomodations.

It's possible to get a LCT without applying for one. It happened to my friend, and I've seen his room...and it's really not that bad at all. Beds are never bunked in regular rooms, but in an LCT, two of them are bunked and one is not. They had quite a lot of floor space, but closet space was really cramped. If saving the $2K is going to help, I really don't think it's a lot to sacrifice.

How difficult is it to get a room on a substance-free floor? About what percentage of people who fill out the application for such a room actually get assigned to one? Thanks.

I'm really not sure how difficult it would be Sarah. I can't imagine it being very hard to get one of those rooms though, as they are probably not in high demand (after all it is college). If you really want one, I think you'll get it.
