So Johnst, I take it that you want me to reply to this thread. So, let me see.

Well, in a case where the score is below the median (not sure about NYU Stern...I should be sure, because if Penn rejects me ED, that's where I am applying), I say the most important thing is to let them know...you. Every college wants kids who adds to their class. So, I hope that on your application, you emphasized what you could contribute to their class. I always hear ppl say that colleges are judging by numbers, they might be in some aspects, but there are always kids who surprises me..who gets in with no URM, legacy, or above median scores, and those are often the kids who sweeps the admissions committe off their feet through the essays, recs, and just basically their person as a whole.

Johnst, when I see your stats, the only problem besides the lower SAT scores is ECs. National youth leadership forum..it doesn't count for much of anything, btw.... You should definitely emphasize your passions, and the whole app must be coherent as a whole...I think the best way is to think about what kind of person do you want the person reading your app to see. And focus on that point, and sell yourself...I hate to predict chances, because, honestly, I don't know. I have a friend who got into Princeton, Harvard, Chicago, Stanford, Penn, and some other elite schools with a 1420 SAT and avg. SATII scores (not even one high 700). Princeton flew the kid out there because they wanted him so much. And one of my best buddies got into Penn with a 1360...so, that just proves the number-oriented perceptions of the world here at CC wrong. Hope that helped a bit.

yeah cool thanks alot... I tried to make the essay and short answers exactly as you said so hopefully it will help. Also, my brother attends Stern for graduate school and helped me a little with the short answer so thats a plus, and thanks for your help best of luck to you...

oh and btw could you evaluate my chances on the other schools i listed i know alot of them are reaches which i have no chance but i decided to give it a shot since i think my essay is pretty strong.

Where are you from Johnst? If you are from somewhere in Idaho...then that increases your chances of exceptance a lot. Any AP classes? Any AP scores? Anything else you think might be relevant? The ECs, I always get the feeling, ok, it's a fact, that admissions like to see ECs past a two year mark, meaning that you've dedicated yourself to a certain category for at least two years. THEY LOVE LONG-TERM COMMITMENTS.

I am from the northeast, New Jersey (damn im screwed...) Yeah my senior schedule is all APs (6) and I have gotten all A's and A-'s so far... I have been part of my ECs throughout HS and have made commitments, based on this do you think you can evaluate my chances at the other schools.. thanks a lot

First of all, I agree with everything Catch-22 has said so far. He's taken a lot of my suggestions. I think, personally, you should play up your activities a bit more. Explain a little bit (even a sentence) on your resume about what you do specifically to contribute to each group. For example, the "research class" and the poetry honor struck me as particularily impressive. I've never met anyone who's done that, and yet... I'd like to know more, you know? Play up all those extra talents you have. ^__^ Make them known more to them so they can fully appreciate them.

I hope that helped a bit. ^__^
Best of luck to you!

Okay, here it goes. Because you are from NJ, that is a big disadvantage. And honest to self, I do not know all that much about a few of the colleges you listed. But, I'll give it a shot. I am sure that you have a good chance at GW, but Georgetown is a reach. Again, fight for your life on the apps. Basically, all of the "bigger names" on your list are going to be reaches, but, besides the numbers, remember to pound in your personality and emphasize your unique character. I recommend you to read a book, it's called "Rock Hard Apps" because you remind me of a kid that's in there.
