NYU v. Dartmouth

From Ask The Dean: “I have been admitted to my state university but am on the waitlist for their honors program.”

That seems like an unethical bait-and-switch situation. “You’re a top student, and we want you to improve our overall stats, so we’ll tempt you with honors, but you probably won’t get into the program. Still, it’s nice to trap you to keep you out of our rival LAC.” ;)

So just wondering – what happens if you’re waitlisted somewhere? Obviously you’d deposit at one college and then if you got accepted at the other you’d have to call admissions and cancel. Not double-depositing but pretty similar; what do people say in those cases?

This is pretty funny. Since most people are stuck between NYU and other schools because NYU is the more expensive option, not the cheaper one.

So yeah, definitely NYU. :)

Getting a call from a waitlist is no problem; it’s part of standard summer melt. There’s nothing whatsoever dishonest or unethical about accepting the spot. The losing school may make a call to its waitlist for a replacement. It’s part of the ripple effect that can go well into summer.

Have you contacted Dartmouth about this? Maybe they will give you some aid. I would try and negotiate with them.

These schools could not be more different. I hope you have visited them. Dartmouth is a much more traditional college experience.

It is more expensive to live in NY than at Dartmouth, but even so that won’t add up to 100K.

oh yeah…there are way more girls than guys at NYU than Dartmouth, and no school spirit or sports to speak of. Dartmouth has lots of school spirit and lots of guys. Really depends on what you’re looking for.

I think you must love the city to be happy at NYU.
