NYU vs GW vs BC

I am currently extraordinarily torn. I am currently looking into majoring in international relations. I am torn between New York University, George Washington University and Boston College. George Washington is the only of the three that is offering money and it is a very sizable amount. I have been able to visit Boston College and George Washington University. I love the location of GW in downtown DC and love the city. I am slightly concerned about fitting in at whatever school I end up picking and GW students struck me as a little bit more rowdy which makes me nervous as I’m more of a tempered, kind mannered kind of kid.

There is no doubt in my mind that Boston College is more prestigious and the professors were unmatched by GW. Even though the international studies degree is less known at BC, I sat in on a lecture and I was nothing short of impressed. The schools location is less than ideal for my field though. I was struck by the lack of diversity on campus and it seems like most students at the school are more of the athletic ‘Jcrew’ type of kids which makes me extremely nervous as I’ve always been more of the artsy kind of kid. (I’ve never been one to conform and I don’t plan on it… but I really don’t want to be stuck as an outsider even if I do present myself kindly and confidently.) I want to fall in love with BC but I’m not sure on the amount of International Relations relevant internships would be available to me through BC. (Although I’m willing to do summer programs in DC regardless.) The religious aspect of BC blew me away and I absolutely loved it and it doesn’t seem to be a facade which is great. I love the Jesuit idea of getting a moral and ethical portion of my education integrated in my classes.

I know very little about NYU but I’ve talked to a few people and it definitely sounds like I would fit in best from what I’ve heard. (Once again I haven’t visited.) Unfortunately the NYU international relations program is very hard to get into but I’m sure I would be content and more than happy as a poly sci major. I really need advice as the decision needs to be made soon! I thank those of you who were willing to read through this. Please no school bashing! If you do go to these schools or no anything useful please let me know! If you know anything about going into the diplomatic core or state department from any of the schools please let me know as well!

I should also note that I plan on going to graduate school and want a good jumping point to apply for a strong IR grad school such as Georgetown or John Hopkins.

For IR , this is sort of a no brainer for GWU , especially if it’s cheaper. The internships, events, speakers, and faculty there will give you exposure and connections you wont get at the other 2 schools.
