I just got accepted to UMass Amherst. I have already applied to NYU using Early Decision 2. Would UMass be better for computer science? Keeping in mind that I would be studying at NYU Courant not Tandon.
At school, in 9th & 10th grade my marks were in between 85-90% . In 11th, they were about 70% (I have taken up Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Computer Science). I’m currently in 12th grade.
SAT scores: 1250/1600 on the New SAT. 700 on Math Level 2 Subject Test.
I know tuition at NYU is way costlier considering that I even got a scholarship of $8000/year at UMass. But I think it’ll be fine. I didn’t apply for any aid, so yeah financial aid won’t be necessary but it would be good to get it.
UMass has a pretty good CS program. If there’s a big cost differential between the two, I see no tangible advantages in paying a lot more to get a CS degree at NYU, even if your family can afford it – unless you really want to go to NYU for other reasons.
One more question…
One of my friends suggested that I apply to Penn State - University Park. Would that be a better choice than UMass or there’s no need to apply?
You said you applied to NYU ED2 so if you get in and the school is affordable you have committed to attend. It is not worth considering other colleges until you hear from NYU.
Wait for decisions before deciding, but UMass CS would be the best of all the options you presented so far. I would recommend applying to PSU - University Park as well though if you do not have more safety/match schools.
Lbad is right in general when comparing UMass to NYU/PSU, but UMass CS is a completely different ballgame. If you have been accepted there with scholarship, I don’t see much chance that you get a better opportunity.
LOL all the people here saying NYU is better than Umass Amherst or CS… If it’s not tandon, it doesn’t even come close. If it is tandon, it is close, but Umass is still better.
Also Umass and PSU are pretty close in terms of CS. One of my college counselors said PSU has a stronger reputation for CS, but Idk about that. I got a 12k scholarship from Umass and I will most likely be going there. But I’m planning to visit both schools in my break and see which one is a better. I suggest you do the same.
There’s really little reason to go into enormous debt for a NYU CS degree, IMO, when you have a good program at Umass available to you at a more manageable price.
Isn’t NYU Tandon formerly the independent Polytechnic University they bought a few years ago? That school wasn’t rated very highly i’m not sure how much has changed since NYU took it over.
It’s general consensus that Tandon is actual sht, competitive hs students joke about it when applying to NYU. Looking at CS ranking Tandon at brooklyn is 70 while NYU at manhattan is 29. Umass is actually higher at 25 but the overall brand recognition is held by NYU. It’s safer for future job prospects or grad school opportunities to go to the real NYU.
