Hi I am trying to decide between NYU and UMD College Park. I know they are very different (city vs. big school) but can anybody give me some insight?

I am an incoming transfer student for sophomore year. I want to do Politics at NYU or Government and Politics at University of Maryland.

Thank you!

Another poster has asked the same question and there were a number of good replies. Not sure I recall the thread title but you could likely find it by doing a search with your terms

Well, here are some things to consider

(1) NYU is one of the worlds top schools for politics. It regularly produces world class and world leading research in politics. In fact, there are multiple professors at NYU who have invented quantitative theorems for political analysis. Bueno de Mesquita is probably the most famous quantitative political analyst in the world who had pioneered the field, he’s faculty at NYU. If you’re looking for a top research school, NYU wins.

(2) That being said, NYU teaches a lot of quantitative politics meaning that there will be math involved in some of your politics courses. It will range from simple algebra to multivariate regression, etc.

(3) How do you identify politically? NYU is one of the most liberal and politically active schools in the US. UMD is more conservative and less active.

(4) Is cost a factor?

I am concerned about the math focus at NYU for politics. I am not particularly great at math, will this be a huge problem?

If you can handle algebra and graphing you should be fine. Professors usually allow calculators for anything more difficult
