Obama: The University of Chicago Democrat

The writer of this piece, Cass Sunstein, will soon be leaving us Elle Woods's alma mater... but I found it fun to read on a few levels:

Obama: The University of Chicago Democrat - Open University

Unalove, thanks for the link.

That's a really impressive testimonial that increases my enthusiasm for Obama.

But that doesn't allay my fears that the madding crowd is going to round on him as a pointy-headed elitist.

Or that the realities of big-time national politics, practiced intelligently, are going to bleach out all of that independent thinking until it's unrecognizable.

Or, worse, that he will suffer the fate of Jimmy Carter and Herbert Hoover, two extremely intelligent, independent thinkers, who failed to practice big-time national politics intelligently.

Finally: Cass Sunstein, ex-Harvard Law Review, liberal University of Chicago law professor, is very impressed by Barack Obama, ex-Harvard Law Review, liberal University of Chicago law professor, and someone who, unlike Sunstein and most liberal law professors, has actually done something to put his ideals into action. (But he still calls Cass to talk con law.) Shocker!

What would really be impressive would be if there were an article like that by Richard Posner or Richard Epstein.

"4. Or, worse, that he will suffer the fate of Jimmy Carter and Herbert Hoover, two extremely intelligent, independent thinkers, who failed to practice big-time national politics intelligently."

If Hebert Hoover was an "intelligent, independent thinker", his response (or perhaps lack thereof) to the Depression really didn't show it.

But I guess that's somewhat your point.

Sounds like somebody wants a spot in an Obama Administration.

I think it is precisely his rhetorical abilities as a demagogue that have taken him so far.

I would argue that the work of a legal scholar as prominent as Cass Sunstein has been "put into action" purely by its impact on thousands of lawyers across the world, but then again, coming from the University of Chicago, I believe in the power of theory.

I think Posner & Epstein know too much about economics to be as gung-ho for Obama.

Thank you for posting this link una, very insightful and a must read in my opinion.

As a campaign representative for Obama's campaign for over a year now I have heard a lot from both sides; but, this really gives a unique perspective.

I will be sure to pass it on.
