Hi my nephew is considering Oberlin and is interested in the 3/2 program with Cal Tech. Does any one have any experience with the program or knows anyone who went through the program?

I had a friend at Oberlin who did 3/2 Engineering with Columbia. It’s a very small program at Oberlin, but there is a faculty advisor (Taylor Allen) who works with these students from day one to ensure they are prepared. In my experience, about five students (give or take) pursue this program each year. The most popular partner school to which students transfer is WashU. While it is very doable for students to complete their Oberlin major and the engineering prerequisites within the 3 years at Oberlin, I think that students have a hard time parting with Oberlin after only 3 years…leaving all their friends behind a year early Hope that helps! (and feel free to contact Taylor Allen with questions, he’s incredibly nice!)

This blog might help a little:

This is a great program for the student who wants to experience a top small LAC and yet also get an engineering degree. The students who pursue it (and adhere to its requirements) are super happy that they did it. They end up more marketable with two degrees, they have good friends at two different institutions and have experienced two distinct learning environments – all which helps to them prepare for their adult future. The two catches with the program are maintaining a grade point average and taking the required courses by the end of junior year, thus there is some diligence required. Leaving behind friends early is not enough of a reason not to pursue this kind of program. Friends transfer to other schools, others take 5 or 6 years to graduate. Each students needs to do what is best for him/her and their future in the work place.

Thank you all! I will send your comments on to my nephew who WL at MIT, WUSL, and 4 others …Oberlin is showing him the love! They gave him a scholarship and the a President of the college called and left him a nice message. It helps to be wanted when he was WL as so many schools. Oberlin is a fine school and I hope he jumps at the opportunity to attend. Thanks again!
