Good for him.
^^^ Seriously!
I like this demand … “The creation of a program to enroll recently released prisoners from a nearby prison as undergraduates”
say what !!
And this one -
“a requirement that black student leaders be paid $8.20 an hour for their organizing efforts.”
@GnocchiB -> I’m sure that will be retroactive for the 50 people that spent 4 weeks drafting that 14 page list of demands. Hey Oberlin, you owe us $65,600 for that Demand List.
Where did Oberlin get these students? LOL.
Looks like President Krislov didn’t read the last sentence in the petition!
Oh…oh… :-S
The list is beyond understanding…One of the nine folks that they “DEMAND” be fired, is the poor accounts payable supervisor, for being rude and slow at printing/releasing checks and funds…Off with her head!
Oh dear, they’ll walk out en masse? Buh-bye.
People who “demand” things or else other serious consequences will follow are often called terrorists. I half expect someone or something (a building?) will be taken hostage.
So who are the writers of the demands?
Their demands are essentially to re-institutionalize racism - ensure black faculty get tenured just because they are black, have “safe spaces” for blacks exclusively (gee, so much for de-segregation), hire / fire people explicitly because they are black or not-black. Shame on them and their pathetic little demands.
The term “non-negotiable demands” was coined in the 1960 student protests. Many schools caved then and some have caved now. Refreshing to see Oberlin (of all places) stand up to the students.
I wonder how many CCer’s will flag this thread as inappropriate?
What about the DEMAND for free bussing of Elementary, Middle and High School students PAID FOR BY THE COLLEGE?
Looks like the writers are from a group called Abusua. It seems rather difficult to find out from the news coverage how large this organization is, or how much support it and its demands have from others.
Some of these “demands” seem like actually decent suggestions, but suggestions that should extend to all students, rather than just black students. For example,
If you take out “Black” those actually seem like reasonable and beneficial proposals. But by including them in a list of race-specific “demands”, the “student leaders” have all but ensured that they will be ignored.
Then you can add lawyers…especially those employed by large corporations or well-off individuals comfortable with the idea of using lawyer-drafted letters issuing demands which must be complied with or “serious consequences will follow” to intimidate less financially well-endowed individuals and smaller businesses.
Some examples I’ve seen are ones written by lawyers working on behalf of individuals/companies who happened to be landlords to friends whom they wanted to intimidate into complying with demands which were at best legally dubious and sometimes blatantly illegal*. Unfortunately, their tactics have been effective because many tenants do not know their rights as tenants under their respective state/local municipal laws.
- Upon calling their bluff by citing specific tenant laws in the state concerned in the reply and telling them they could take it up with the courts if they wanted, the matter was usually dropped by the landlords.
But is there any indication that Oberlin hasn’t provided financial aid workshops, that the forms aren’t on the online database? Maybe they are there already. Most FA officers are happy to discuss the financial aid package with any student who needs to discuss it, and even with students before enrolling, which is when they really need to understand it. Are they asking for things that are already available?
No they are asking for their own ones for Black students by Black staffs.
Probably that’s necessary since they are also asking for special financial aids for Black students as well.
I demand that any student who capitalizes “black” or “white” other than at the beginning of a sentence be immediately flunked out of college, as they are too stupid to be there.
What are these paper tigers going to do now?
