Oboe studios

Trying to decide between oboe studio at Carnegie Mellon University (CFA) vs. that at University of Texas at Austin (Butler School of Music). I am aware of the costs at both programs. I would appreciate non-financial observations regarding the programs' various strengths and weaknesses if any. Any help would be appreciated.

schoolseeker, welcome. If you’ve been accepted at both programs, congrats. I’d be happy to add them to our current master list http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/music-major/817953-master-list-acceptances-fall-2010-a.html</a></p>

Just a heads up, but there is not a lot of oboe info on the board. Of the few oboe players that have posted acceptances to the Master lists over the past few admissions cycles, none were at either of the institutions you name.

Nothing that I can find comes up in through the search feature. I don’t know enough about oboe specifically to comment on either.

Perhaps some of the woodwind posters may have some insights.

Another source of info might be one of the instrument specific forums. There may be a link within here http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/music-major/608305-useful-music-links.html</a>

Good luck to you.

UT at Austin’s oboe professor used to play in the National Symphony. She is very good. My previous teacher is in their undergrad oboe program and made it to the finals of the San Francisco Symphony oboe audition. The oboists coming out of the program are doing pretty well in their auditions.
