Ocean Engineering?

Hi, high school junior here! I’m super interested in majoring in engineering. especially aerospace/mechanical/marine. MIT has always been my dream school and I noticed that they also have an ocean engineering concentration field. How does this one stack up to programs such as the Umich marine/naval architecture program?

This is a bit of a tough question to answer.

MIT does not have a dedicated ocean engineering program the way that, say, University of Florida does.

Instead, MIT’s program is a specialization under the department of mechanical engineering .

Because of this distinction, you might not find MIT listed as a top ranked ocean engineering school. However, MIT is ranked #1 for mechanical engineering schools, according to US News.

So, take that as you may.

MIT used to have a dedicated Ocean Engineering program, Course 13. They have now merged it with Course 2, You should look at the web site and see how many (or how few) junior faculty are working in this area. That will tell you about MIT’s long-term commitment to the program. Or not.
