October 2009 SAT Critical Reading

It was definitely “mocking conventional biographies of artists” and having a “wry” tone.

wait no he says the genius has to be cultivated or something

Well I had it narrowed down to:

A) Introduced an (interesting or something like interesting or new) thesis.
B) Historical Speculation.

Also, it was one of the last questions so it might not be the obvious answer. He was wondering what that guy would think of the modern uses. Sounds like a thesis to me more so than historical speculation.

Did anyone put emphasize novelty and variety of the whatever in the universe one.

Anyone remember the other answer choices for this question?

yeah that’s what i put skyhigh

yes, to emphasize novelty

and the one where the earth was viewed from space, the answer was like “because it wasn’t like the detail geologists studied” right?

Yeah, I put novelty and variety.

Agreed. Also, was he mocking contemporary biographers? Sixteenth century isn’t very contemporary.

The answer has “historical speculation”; it seems a bit obvious, but the author is clearly speculating as to what Mercator would have said had he seen the modern usage of his creation.

Yeah, I put emphasize novelty and variety for one of the universe questions.

Chair 2: I put taht also.

It was conventional, not contemporary.

No, it said “mocking CONVENTIONAL biographies”, not contemporary.

And for the geologist one, I got details.

for that one about the boy… was he annoyed or angered about the situation he got into or more ashamed? the question was something like that. those were the answers i was leaning towards

if we had the passage the answer would be clear.

immediately identifyable is correct.

also I put wry, mocking, and historical speculation.

what was the variety and novelty question?

answer my question from the previous page. It was the second to last question to the end of the passage about the boy who changed names

“what was the variety and novelty question?” second…

I still disagree with historical speculation. He didn’t wonder what Mercator would do, he put up the idea about alien planets being simliar to an ancient earth.
