<p>“but it got at something” is clear transition from the introduction (the anecdote) to the discussion of writing. Sure the anecdote may give insights into character, but that is not the main purpose of its being there.</p>
<p>It’s not triumphant because really, what did the author triumph over that would cause her to act triumphant all of a sudden? The passage wasn’t an argument piece where at the end the author would be like, “aha i proved you wrong!!” It was just simply a resolute statement.</p>
