my january critical reading score:
Number Wrong: 9
Number Omitted: 0
Total Number of Questions: 67
Raw Score: 56
Got a 690

there was a double passage about scientists interfering with political matters and the environment and another physics passage about its impersonal nature
which one was experimental?

well i got the physics one but not the political matters one so the political matters one must have been experimental.

my experimental was CR

for those who said sardonic for the psychic passage. it has to be baffled.
sardonic: characterized by bitter or scornful derision; mocking; cynical; sneering
baffled: to confuse, bewilder, or perplex

the sentence was "To me, the biggest mystery of all is why so many fortune-tellers choose to work the phones on TV psychic hotlines instead of becoming insanely wealthy futures traders on Wall Street."

the word biggest mystery makes it baffle. and there really is no mockery or scornful derision. it really isn't such a negative sentence. he just wonders why they wouldnt do something more lucrative. just because he thinks u cant infer he's mocking them or deriding them. thats a pretty big assumption. its like someone is making fun of u or putting u down just because he thinks u can make more money else way. i strongly believe its baffled

hes being sarcastic when he says that. his main point is that obviously fortune tellers are fake

it's flowery/unambiguous fact

guys..the latter part is not an assertion. don't all human beings agree that factories pollute the environment? it's a FACT. can't you all agree that people are starving in Africa? it's a FACT!

2nd passage #5: halcyon

psychic is chalartan (a fake professional). its not oracle because he

casts doubt on their true abilities.
tone = sardonic

tribunal = ojective

tone of physicist:
self-congratulatory, wi****l, restrained, irate, nostalgic
I put irate, but it might be restrained

purose of the moon trip
objective truths having practical benefits

crush = overabundance
melt = merge
purpose of scientific meetings = extensive personal interaction (not

sure)
plums = undiscovered scientific truths
lies = resides

how he compares universality:
the way how they achieve it (A)

african american photos: obession
extreme behavior of adults

photos on wall
i put heritage

photos analogous to woman reading diary

difference between album and wall
album: must be opened
wall: always on display

memory recuperative because they can heal..(E)

candy factories
first is naive, second is indignant
technique of second writer:
facetious exlamation followed by earnest

aunt sylvie mermaid metaphor
i put part of outdoor. because the passage says: "to sunk into the very

element it is meant to exclude." a house is supposed to be a shelter

from the outside world, but the aunt wants to be sunk into this darkness.

pronunciation of evening
DEFINITELY double meaning of a word (EVEN-ing)

historians
1st author thinks them as valuable and indispensable
2nd author argues about RELIABILITY OF HISTORIANS

dubious scholarly detachment

purpose of author of Passage 1 (the history passage)
i put purpose of history
sailer: captain's attitude
distressed but determined

main idea = power of the sea

all the answers i put above are not experimental
Japanese girl, duck/rabbit is experimental

so what did u put for the tone of the physcist?
btw is it true that this time we get our scores quicker? in 2 weeks?

its not sarcasm because he is confused. is he really bitter and contemptuous and mocking cause thats what sardonic means. its a really a negative word. plus if u r saying sardonic is the answer u can make the same argument for condescending which was another choice.

I put restrained for the tone of the physicist, but it seems like the majority of people put wi****l.

"dubious scholarly detachment" wasnt the answer was it wasnt it like E. the queston was like what does author 2 think of historical books

I put "irate at the political implications" for an answer on one of them, but I think I got it horribly wrong. I think the other answer I was contemplating for that one was something about being skeptical. Does anyone know?

its funny how wi****l is censored

The discussion is finished (someone posted the actual passage) and its concluded that its the oracle. Charlatan means the author believed they are all fakes. However, this is over-analyzing, and is merely implied (especially in line 1 only)

Overabundance has a negative-connotation and therefore is wrong. This is still debatable but most people are still debating on whether its stampede or overabundance. But stampede also has meaning of "sudden rush of people doing something" so It is most likely stampede in my opinion. Overabundance means he has an opinion that its more than needed, which is wrong in my opinion.

ok the one about indignant, was that the same question that contained "pensive" and "evasive" as answer choices as well??

How about the universaility question? A lot of my friends put B, analyzes ways in which they are written about, sinbce he quotes someone who discusses that very concept.

no that one was A now was "pensive" "evasive" "indignant" all choices in that one question about the candy shop?

8parks11, I understand your reasoning behind the baffled/oracle vs sardonic/charlatan question, but to consider that question over and done with is incredibly arrogant. There is clearly a sardonic tone when he comments that these psychics should become insanely wealthy traders rather than on telephone hot-lines. Granted, he calls this a mystery, but the implication that becoming an insanely wealthy trader is the better life choice gives the passage a very sardonic and sarcastic finishing sentence.

Next, to your choice of stampede, stampede can only be used in a very literal sense in which a group of people make a choice or action to surge in a direction. Academic Journals are not capable of making this choice. And thus academic journals are not capable on stampeding. Think about it, The academic journals were stampeding. That just can't happen.

1) was naive the right answer?
2) sounding - fathoming/proclaiming do we have a consensus on that yet?
3) facetious/earnest assertion....consensus?
4) inevitable doom vs. oblivious

also the one about what does author not do was it anecdote or accusation?
and the tone of the physicist was it wi**** or restrained?

accusation and restrained. i would say wi****l for the tone
