of visits to campus and interviews...

I'm visiting a few campuses next week and I had a few questions:

-How should I dress?
-What kind of questions will they ask me during the interviews?
-How important is the interview to the admissions officers?
-What kinds of questions should I ask them?
-Will the guides show me around campus?
-My cousin is at Exeter. Would I be able to say hi to him when I visit?

clothes: make sure what you are wearing complies with the school dress code. i would wear flats if i were you. um, if you do wear makeup dont overload, nothing flashy. it is basically a bit semi-formal. what you wear kind of gives the school an idea of how serious you are about applying. anyway, that is just a personal opinion. others may think differently.

questions: i guess it depends on the school. but generally "why do you want to come to ____""why are you leaving your current school?""what are your interests, fave subjects?" in the end, tell the school as much about yourself as you can so that they can get a more complete picture of you. this way they can see if you are well matched for the school. these arent exeters questions but they give a good idea about what your interview will be like: St. George's ~ Questions

questions for them: anything you want to know. just make sure it is not in the brochure/video/website. also usually it is a good idea to see what is in the brochure first because then if you are interested in anything there, you can ask them to talk more about it.

guides: yes, that is their job.

cousin: i am not sure.. you should ask the school. perhaps if you come early or stay later you could see him between classes or after school. i dont think they would want you to disrupt his class or your interview/tour.

pm me for any more help. this is all just from what i have read here and personal experience however,so remember to read what is on the school's website etc. as well to get a full picture of what they expect. good luck!

For your clothes I would recommend something comfortable enough that you aren't worrying about your clothes and distracted from the tour/interview. For all of my visits I wore a cableknit sweater with nice pants and felt that I fit in well, looking appropriately formal but not like my parents had dressed me up. Make sure to dress warmly though, because your tours will be outside and it can be pretty chilly!

The interview questions vary by school, I only applied to 3 schools and each of them was very different. Andover just had me fill out a sheet about myself and then the interviewer sort of went through it and I elaborated on it. St. Paul's asked me pretty standard questions like why I wanted to go there, what I was reading, my interests, etc. Exeter was probably the hardest interview, but it was my favorite because it gave me the best opportunity to really shine. The questions were similar to something you might right an essay on for an application or something, so they required more thought, but don't be afraid to stop and think a few seconds to formulate a good response!!

I think the interview is important, because it's really a good way to see your personality but I don't think it's going to singlehandedly allow or prevent you from going. Like my exeter interviewer really liked me but at the end they informed me that they really hoped my grades/recommendations/SSATs stood up to my personality (implying that the fact that they said I was one of their favorite interviewees ever wouldn't get me in if everything else wasn't up to par - although hopefully it'll help!!)

As for questions, definitely read through the brochure before hand so you have a sense of what you like about each school so then you can ask about specifics, I'm sure certain questions will come up on the tour too. But asking questions for clarification is always good, it shows you're really interested in the school!

Yes, they'll usually show you the major buildings, and hopefully the inside of a dorm room (ask if they don't offer, because it's good to see, and usually they'll be willing to show you their own if there's not a designated one assigned)

And yes, I visited people on all of my trips to the school. I would recommend arranging to meet them before your tour/interview because they'll help calm you down and get excited about the school and that'll reflect in your interview/tour. Don't expect to have time to say hi during the interview/tour though because it's usually scheduled pretty tightly.

Best of luck to you! :)

fadedskyline, what did exeter ask you?
I am not applying to exeter, I have 0% in getting there so it's just money down the drain..
But you know.
Some other schools that I am applying to might have similar questions.
For the book questions, do they ask you what is your favorite author?
I am REALLY nervous, cause I don't really have a favorite author..
ANd even if I answer, I did not read a lot of his/her books, so I may be in deep trouble.

Thanx for all the advice! :) I'm SOOOOOO NERVOUS! I applied to six schools, though, so I think I'll get in to at least one of them.

Good luck to all of you and may you all get in to your first choice school!

:) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :)

(Pardon my overuse of the smiley face. They're rather addictive. Hehe.)

I think on the websites for tabor and i think st. george's, but im not sure, have a page that tells you what they might ask on a interview and what to wear...........you should probably dress really nice by the way

How should I dress?
Don't wear jeans! For guys, blazers or jackets would be fine. For girls, dress pants, dresses, or skirts with leggings...

-What kind of questions will they ask me during the interviews?
I'm sure they are going to ask about your classes and interests. Different schools ask different questions...interesting ones too!

-How important is the interview to the admissions officers?
I'd say pretty important. If you going to tour the school, you might as well schedule an interview too because it shows your interest. In fact, I think most schools require interviews.

-What kinds of questions should I ask them?
Ones that are not readily available in the website or brochures...maybe you can ask about a specific class, one that you are interested in taking. (do some research, look up their catagloue!) You can also ask about how students spend their weekends at the school, etc.

-Will the guides show me around campus?
You need to schedule a tour so of course!

-My cousin is at Exeter. Would I be able to say hi to him when I visit?
Call the admission office at Exeter and tell them you have a relative there and interested in meeting him. I'm a tour guide at my school and whenever I tour kids, I always see a paper with their names on it. Kids occasionally have a sibling or relative and it shows up on the paper.

Thanx for answering my questions! Y'all are so helpful. I'm pretty nervous, but this is a lot of help. :)

Don't think many people mentioned this, but smile! It gives them a feeling that you like being there. My parents told me that the interviewer told them they liked me a lot because I was polite and kept smiling.

iHerculez, I kept on smiling too. Haha. Sure didn't hurt me. :)

By the way, for some schools I don't think the interview matters much if they're willing to waive that requirement. My interviewer admitted that.

Oh, and I showed up in one alumni interview wearing my school uniform since the only availabe appointment was on a weekday, so I went straight to her home from school. Is this bad?

cate_intl...an admissions officer at St. Paul's or Taft or something commented on the fact that kids were wearing uniforms, and said he appreciated that they took the time out of their normal work time to learn more about the school

cate - I'm sure your school uniform was fine especially since she probably knew you came straight from school.

your school uniform is probably best suited for the interview as it is designed for an educational environment :) (that being said, dont show up on a saturday afternoon in full school gear because you couldnt find anything else to wear :P). but seriously, i dont think that would be something the school would have a problem with.

YAY! So I've gotten off my flight and I'm visiting Exeter, Andover, and Loomis on Monday and Tuesday. I'm excited, but also a bit apprehensive...

Any more advice? I'm interviewing tomorrow...nervous!

I'll post again afterwards.

aaahhh!! how did it go.. im sure you did just great :) tell me all about loomis when you visit alright.. i didnt get a chance to see their campus

I'm sorry, xox! I completely forgot about this thread! Anyways, Loomis is gorgeous, but I might be a bit biased because I like the sight of lots of trees everywhere and all...It's nice because you get a feeling of being out in the country, even though you're about a seven minute walk away from the nearest cafe. The campus isn't too spread out, but it's not cramped at all. Overall, it's a really pretty school.

ooooh nice. i'm applying to loomis. what were the people like?
