For off-campus housing, would you say there are more houses or more apartments available? Which of the two are more popular among students?

Lots of both. Probably more apartments available given all the new construction. Do whatever you prefer, but try to plan early.

I’m trying to find a studio or one bedroom for my son, and I find that a lot of complexes are opening in the fall, so finding one where he can move in mid August is problematic. Anyone have any recommendations for the existing complexes? Some of these complexes must be luxury apartments, given the price, but he’s going to be a grad student and wants to live on his own, no roommates, so beggars can’t be choosers, I tell him.

Look into the housing cooperatives. No idea when they fill, but that’s what I would do if I were a grad student.

Most of the new buildings are luxury (in terms of $, anyway) so look elsewhere if sticker shock is setting in. Craigslist is kind of sketch, but that’s where some people look for housing.

Many leases will start 9/1, so he may need to find temporary housing before that.
