Off college topic - illness remedies??

Hi all you acting/MT parents - I came here thinking I would find threads on this already (and maybe they are here and I missed them). . . after months of trying to keep my D healthy through audition season we’re coming up on a critical audition this weekend and she’s got a sore throat! We’ve started the typical Zicam, EmergenC, tea, water. . wondering if you folks who live this too have any secret remedies that always work for you??

I’m sure we’d all love to build the arsenal on this front as there is ALWAYS a critical audition or show ahead!

Three secret weapons, @backstagemom ! There’s a Chinese cold medicine syrup - Nin Jiom Pei Pa Koa - is very good at soothing the throat and works great for singers. Colloidal silver drops help to fight off a throat infection. Throat Coat tea in dire emergencies - it kind of numbs the throat so it’s easy to over-do … NOT for everyday use! I think you can get all 3 on amazon, they may be hard to find locally.

@CaMom13 - thank you, Amazon order placed!! Theater parents are a rock-star support network!

Does she also use a personal steam inhaler? That can very helpful if the throat is dry and irritated. Also, put her on complete vocal rest until she absolutely has to speak or sing.

@MTBackstagemom during auditions, my S was introduced to Singer’s Saving Grace…he now uses it before any audition…(I think it’s a licorice base). you can get it on Amazon too…

Honestly, my best recommendation is that you need to have one song in your book that you can sing even if you’re sick–because sometimes you WILL need to audition sick (although have it be known that I think that there’s nothing wrong with cancelling an audition because you’re unwell. Often, that’s what the people behind the table would prefer, anyway).

One of my friends uses Somewhere That’s Green when her voice isn’t up to other things in her book–she’s a Mayzie LaBird type, and this song works for her because not only is it in her wheelhouse, but the material also dramaturgically supports that Audrey doesn’t need to be the greatest singer. There’s similar material for everyone out there! People behind the table can forgive ‘bad’ singing if the song still has an arc and you act your pants off.

Make a ginger and cinnamon tea. A little bit of honey is okay too. I cut up one ginger root into fairly large chunks and put it into a large thermos with one or two cinnamon sticks and the honey. Boil water and pour into the thermos. Let steep for at least a half-hour and shake well. Then drink it all day long. Do this from the second she starts feeling anything. If she finishes the thermos, make another. It’s a godsend. Got my daughter through audition season, and that says a lot (her director’s tech week speech was always “remember to get sleep, eat well, wash your hands a lot, and stay away from Cami…”)

Thank you all so much for the guidance - I used it all!

She made it through the audition successfully and I appreciate all of the support!
