Off-cycle internship

I'm trying to tread lightly in this situation so as to avoid appearing too pushy.

I have a contact that's an MD in S&T at a BB, who was willing to help me out with an internship during the fall and spring. However, they talked to HR and the person there told them they don't do that sort of thing.

I've been reading up WallStreeOasis, and it seems that it is possible that there are interns during the year (and it support the MD's observation that there are interns hanging around in the fall and spring). I am wondering the best way to re-approach the contact with the same question, but bringing up this information. I am also thinking of asking him to ask his boss about hiring an intern.

What is the correct way to go about this? Do MD's have the clout to just hire whomever they need? I am surprised that he, as an MD having worked there for years, wouldn't have have a clue regarding internships.

MDs often have some clout, but not always enough to go bringing on interns. If you don’t need pay, one option would be to reach back out and ask if you could intern unpaid - just for the experience. That could absolutely set you up for a nice SA position next summer as well.
