Official 2008 Questbridge National College Match Discussion and Help

During the RD round when you're not matched, partner colleges are still able to see and read your QB essays. That's obviously a huge advantage.

All of them can?

I know they didn't match you, but Stanford being one of their partner colleges, did Questbridge help you consider it as one of your choices?
It did, actually. I wasn't even considering Stanford (I had thought about it, but then ruled it out), but decided to apply largely because of QuestBridge. A year and a half later, and I'm a student there. :)
Since you weren't matched, what was done with your essays and stuff?
Well, I used some of the essays on the Common App, though of course the QB app was forwarded to the colleges I asked for.

No, just the ones you request.

Is there a limit? I assume so but just wondering...also, Commonapp has supplemental stuff for colleges so did you have to send that in addtion to what QB forwarded?

Agent of Sense,

No limit, although you have to personally email QB asking them to forward your stuff to any number of QB colleges after you weren't matched.

Yes, you have to do every part of the CommonApp as well as the QB app. Try best not to write the same thing over -- use these extra parts to display different parts of yourself.

What do you mean? You choose the colleges that you want your application forwarded to RD. QB will do that. If you want them to forward it to colleges you didn't select when you filled out the app, then you can email them and ask them to.

As said, there is no limit to the # you can forward to RD; however, you can only choose 8 for the Match round.

^Wow! Stanford is my top choice! May I ask, if you don't mind, what your stats were?

Kyledavid80, THANKS! ahhh that made my day, because I know the QB app will help me a lot. Thank you!!!

I think a mod should "sticky" this thread...it's really quite helpful.

I'll try sticky for a while and see what happens. I've noticed that regular participants and new participants alike are often blind to sticky threads.

Whoah, there's a common app sticky?

Yay! Token Super Moderator FTW!
Well, I don't typically give out my "stats" (largely because people on CC try to evaluate others too much based on that), but I can give you a general idea: ~4.0 UW GPA, 4.6 W, ~2150 on SAT, 34 ACT, 10 APs, etc.

That, though, isn't entirely helpful to you. I will tell you this, and I think it's more helpful than any listing of stats: 'theming' your application can be very advantageous. The 'theme' of mine was language. My course choices reflected that (taking Spanish 1 and 2, skipping 3 and taking AP, self-studying AP Spanish lit, being a bilingual TA, etc.), as well as my success in them. My ECs all had a language focus (writing group, Spanish Club, a linguistics team, etc.), all of which I had a leadership position in, and all of which I was committed to. My English and Spanish teachers emphasized my involvement with language in their recommendations. Many of my awards had to do with writing/language, some local/state/national. In the 'additional info' section, I included the languages I know and all the ones I've studied at one point or another, and talked about an independent research project that also focused on language. More than anything, I tied all this together in my essays: my main essay made passing mention of it, but all of the short answers (and many of the short short answers) focused on my passion for languages and linguistics (my probable major). The idea is to unify the application and show 'intellectual vitality' for something you're passionate about.

Now, I don't think you need to do this--many don't--but I think it can be very helpful, and was what I think distinguished me, as all my admissions officers commented on it on my admissions letters. (Funnily enough, when I met some of them at admit weekends, they were able to identify me and remembered my essays.) To be honest, if one doesn't have super-high numbers, that sort of continuity of passion throughout the application can compensate.

Of course, what do I know? They very well could have picked my name out of a hat. But from all that I've seen, this is a good strategy.

Hope that was more informative than my 'stats.' :)

Sheed30: about time someone else from last year's QB round showed up. ;)

@kyledavid80, wow thanks for the input! Your stats are very similar to mine and I also am very dedicated to two activities. The theming strategy seems very effective and I will definitely incorporate it into my application.

Thank you so much!

the application becomes avaliable on august 15 and is due on september 30... that's not a long time... is there any way that we can get to the essay questions earlier?

and much extra time do you have to submit the extra materials, like the CSS profile?

Look at the questions posted already. It's not likely that the essays on the application will be drastically different. (At least, from what I've seen, they don't change too much.)

<a href="http://questbridge.org/downloads/2007_cm_application.pdf%5B/url%5D">http://questbridge.org/downloads/2007_cm_application.pdf</a></p>

A month and a half is a good enough time to get your essays together. Just make sure not to wait until the last minute.
Those are due to the colleges you rank, by the deadline. The CSS profile, as well as other things like transcripts and test scores, will be due by the individual deadlines (early November). See this for individual schools' requirements:

College Match Program: Requirements

Hi Kyledavid 80! I thank you again for your great help! I've never met so
friendly and informative people online before and I must say that my college search is coming in much more nicely with your assistance. I've got a couple more questions though and I hope that it's not too bothersome... I've realized that the more I research and the more I learn about things, the more questions I seem to have...

so if you don't mind my numbering them:

1) could international students receive FULL FINANCIAL AID during the Regular Decision process? I'm personally a domestic international student(I'm currently residing in U.S. on an alien visa)

2) if there is a college that I would like to apply but am afraid of the possibility of "binding"(given that I'm a finalist and have been matched), would it be better to apply without Questbridge? The reason I'm asking this is because I've seen it somewhere that you need to rank your colleges(up to 8) This would inevitably mean that I would have to choose certain colleges that I had better not select(for reasons that I do not want to disclose).

and thirdly: this is not too relevant to questbridge, but should domestic international students apply by the same application deadlines as the other u.s. citizens/permanent residents or is it different on a case by case basis?

Thanks again for your help! I might come back again with some more questions but I hope it wasn't too much of a bother! :)

I have another question if you don't mind answering.

I'm taking my SAT II's October 6th and the QB deadline for application is September 30th. So, I was wondering if not having SAT II scores will hurt my chances.

Thanks!
