Official 2011 AP US Government Thread

I’m self studying for this exam and I have 2 questions

  1. I have 2 review books (Kaplan 2009 and REA 2009? not crash course) each having a MC question on media bias. Kaplan says there is no bias whereas REA says there’s slight liberal bias. Which one is correct?

  2. Also, in the constitution, the House “[…] shall have the sole Power of Impeachment.”
and “The Senate shall have the sole Power to try all Impeachments.”
    Can someone explain the difference?

Thanks!

House starts the impeachment process, they actually impeach the president. The Senate then will try the president who was impeached and decide whether or not to remove them from office.

Also I doubt you need to know the bias, except that media is getting more similar as a whole

@Lambda, I remember my teacher telling me that the corporations that own the news media tend to be more conservative but the reporters are more liberal. My PR book says that over the course of history the media has grown to be less biased. But of course, because the media can only show so much what they show is also subject to a biased opinion on what’s important. So I guess the main point is that the media has grown less biased over the years but there are still traces of being biased in what choose to report on.
And as for your second question, the House convicts the person of impeachment by a simple majority (I think, not absolutely sure) and the Senate holds the trial with the Chief Justice being the judge of the trial. I think the Senate needs to have a 2/3 vote to impeach the person.

Thanks a lot guys!

Also to past test takers or people taking it tuesday, how much of thehistory portion do you think we have to know.
In other words, how much of the 1700s and creation of constitution etc.
Also how many current events questions are there predicted to be? I havent been paying too much attention lately to the news, can any one highlight important events within the year that may come up?

Thanks all

Current events? This isn’t a history test, this is a government test. I don’t think there’ll be much on current events or the 1700s as you mentioned. The only reason the 1700s should be brought up is to include the formation of our government… I think an overwhelming majority of the test will be based on concepts and ideas.

My textbook says that the media isn’t biased towards a certain ideology or worldview but is reformist so they’ll tend to report about any flaws in policy while avoiding successes in policy.

The media is definitely biased towards conservatives somewhat in my view. Only MSNBC has a “liberal” bias. Fox is ultra-right wing, ABC is somewhat conservative, CBS is moderate, CNN is moderate.

edit: does anyone have rubrics for grading FRQs?

@lamda I would definitely go over the Shay’s Rebellion and how that was significant in the making of the constitution. Also go over the Articles of Confederation and its weaknesses (not enough money to pay militia). Know your compromises too (Connecticut or Great Compromise and 3/5ths Compromise)

Meh. 50/60 on my first PR practice test. Though I felt that it was a little too easy…

I did the 02 test using the new scoring and got a pretty solid 5, if I can do it you all can too! Do you guys think we’ll need to cite specific examples for the FRQs? Like how (for example) particular presidents have used the media to their advantage. Or is that too much for CB to ask for?

Depends on the question, I guess. If it asks you to identify, then no. If it asks you to describe or explain, then sure why not? It’ll only help your answer even more to use specific examples in the correct situation.

What are you all thinking for the FRQs? I’m thinking there could be something about election patterns, political socialization, etc.

Well from what people and my teacher are saying:

Differences House + Senate
Federalism / Specific Amendments (I.E. 1st Amendment - Establishment Clause)
Judicial Selection Process
Campaign Finance Reform (Soft Money, Hard Money, PACs, 527s, McCain-Feingold Act, FECA)
Fiscal Policy / Monetary Policy

In case no one knew-

Anyone else have ideas of what to expect on the FRQ section?

EDIT: What is everyone’s plan today for studying (if any)?

@tasian, I’m just going to do the other MCs I have and then go over all of the other FRQs. I really hope theres not FRQ on Campaign Finance Reform. Can you go over FECA?

I’m guessing that there’s going to be a FRQ on fiscal policy.

For the FRQ, my teacher is predicting something to do with the judicial branch/Supreme Court, like the judicial branch’s influence on public policy. She also thinks there might be something about iron triangles.

My plan for studying is to just review notable court cases, skim over my barron’s and notes, and look at old FRQs.

FECA: The Federal Election Campaign Act was created in 1971.
-required candidates to disclose sources of contributions
-created Federal Election Commission
-created public funding for presidential primaries and general election (subject to limits, both Obama and McCain rejected public funding in 2008)
-placed limits on individual and corporate donations

FECA also allowed soft money contributions, which were later banned by the McCain-Feingold act.

does anyone have a copy of the 2009 exam they can upload or email me? i have exams to trade

I got a 59/60 on the 1999 released exam.

It’s comparative government I’m worried about, to be honest. Though I do need to memorize the court cases… politics is just something I’ve followed deeply since I was young so I’m pretty good at it naturally by this point.

I know I’ll do fine, but at the same time I have this horrible feeling I’m going to walk in and it will all be on the judiciary or something I forgot about ;_;

can anyone email me released exams? I’ll send them out to others who don’t have them. Email me at JesseWedewer@yahoo.com.

What do I need to get a 3? Yea I said it, my school only needs a 3 lol :D

I have 2002’s MC to trade.
