Official 2011 Engineering Grad School Profiles/Results/Discussion

Does anyone know good grad schools for glass/optical engineering? It would help a lot. And would you say Cornell is one of them? I’m trying to convince my friend to go to Cornell and to grad school. Good luck to everyone at their grad schools!

gpa for top grad schools in chem E
I am going to be a freshman at the Louisiana State University Honors College and I am majoring in Chem E. What is a good GPA in the honors college to get into grad schools like mit, stanford, uc berkeley, princeton, cornell, ut austin, etc? In the honors college, students do research with their professor, a thesis, honors classes through projects and research in those classes, internships, study abroad, etc. And they also participate in community service too. im just saying this so you can get an idea of the rigor of the program since that also has an impact on the admissions decision. Is at least a 3.7 good enough? Thanks.

Hey everyone, been lurking just to get a rough idea of timeline, but now I’d like to ask for some opinions.

I applied to 8 top tier schools with a mediocre GPA (but double engineering degree), 2+ years of research but no publications. If I had to make a poor estimation, I would have placed my chances of getting into just one of these schools at about 20-50%, so I’m not expecting miracles.

Anyway, I have not heard ANYTHING from ANY of these schools! All are PhD in MSE (or equivalent) departments. No rejections, invites to interviews, or acceptances. Any opinions on this? It sounds like so many people have been notified of at least something that it makes me wonder what’s going on with mine.

^You probably should have posted in the 2012 thread.

Anyways, I’m not going to mince words-generally the longer it takes you to hear back the worse your chances are. Generally this is around the time that they send offers and invites to come visit their schools. If you have not heard back that probably indicates that you are either on their waitlist or they just haven’t gotten around to rejecting you. I know my program in MSE has yet to reject people but that if you haven’t heard back your chances are pretty slim to none. Note that that does not mean that all hope is lost! Good luck!

Haha, thanks for the reply. No wonder I couldn’t find my post later, I had last year’s thread open to check for relative dates and must have accidentally replied in it.

Anyway, been too busy to check back in, but I have yet to receive denials or acceptances from everywhere but Princeton. I suspect, as you say, most schools are just delaying denials for the slim chance they have extra space.
