"Official" 2014 USABO thread

That’s the way the tests are designed, to select for those who can absorb the most material and retain it.

ok guys, so i’m a bit confused on amino acids. Some sources say there are 8 essential amino acids, some say there are ten, and some say there are 9. Also, some say arginine is required by infants that can’t produce it, and others say histidine cannot be produced by infants. Can anyone help me out here?

Histidine is the ninth essential amino in infants according to Campbell ch. 41.

By the way, does anyone here have access to past semifinal/ open exams?

this website says otherwise. And the source should be quite reliable

Day scores are released pushed back to March 17th?

wow lol. That’s really far away

oh crap. That’s going to be my school’s spring break, so they can’t administer it. Plus I’m going to be out of town

wait ■■■ why?

sigh. I’m praying to god that they will move the semifinal dates so that I won’t have to lose a 3000 dollar deposit on a trip.

Well If you’re familiar with usabo at all u should know that they’re a just a group of “helpless” and “hopeless” people when it comes to technology.

Nice to be able to put a name to the face :D

are the results out?

nope. postponed to the 17th

@botherme where do you see this

their website. calendar

so in order to make make top 20 next year, should i just read Campbell over and over? Would that one textbook suffice to make nationals?

Understand campbell well, but that probably won’t cut it. You should probably study some supplementary material besides that, i.e. Raven’s Biology of Plants, Albert’s molecular biology of the cell (slight overkill), etc.

@ boomvoom

How would you read Campbell over and over? Is that something you just… do? You do realize that reading does not equal skimming by any means. I’m not saying there aren’t speed readers out there. I’m just wondering how one reads a book that thick “over and over.”
