Official Act Math Thread June 2013

What was that specifically asking?

It asked which of these are the same as cosB

And the triangle was 9,12,15.

I’m pretty sure we may be thinking of different ones. Because on the one I’m thinking about, we had to find A

fOR THE SiN a question with triangle did you have to actually have to multiply the cos by the fraction, or do you just do the ratio and which is similar

Oh what about the one with d=130 degrees? The question with the one that is the most helpful

Oh I thought it was because the lines were parallel. Because when the lines are parallel can’t you find the angles?

Does anyone know, with certainty, if the ferris wheel problem was sinusoidal?

For the other triangle one, I’m pretty sure it was that if they gave you the exterior angle of the other angle of the triangle on the bottom, then you could solve it.

Because if you have the exterior angle of two sides of a triangle, then you can solve for two of the interior angles and 180 minus taht is the final angle of the triangle

Did that have parallel as an option?

Yes. It wasn’t correct because just because it was parallel, it wouldn’t give you enough information. At least taht’s what I remember.

For the question about what 9pi/2 equals, did anyone else pick 90 degrees?

I don’t remember what angle it was asking was equivalent to the Cos for the triangle, but I am sure that the answer was Sin.

Also, I put that knowing d=130 was sufficient knowledge to solve. Because you knew the other angle, as you could figure out the supplement, so you could find the supplement of d, then subtract the 2 supplements from 180, and get the answer.

For 9 pi over 2, I did put 90, but I’m not sure.

9 pi / 2 is equal to pi / 2. Therefore, the angle measurement is 90 degrees.

I think towards the end like in 40s early 50s the question about sin and cos and sec and I got tan as answer? Anyone else? It gave you extra info regarding those functions?

I thought the question said biggest rational number? So the two repeating choices would be incorrect.

Or did it say biggest real number?

was referring to this question

The rational number one’s answer was the number that had the one digit repeating (I think it was .34, with four being the repeating digit).

For the rational number, it asked for the largest one. As such, the answer was .3409 (or something like that). A rational number is simply one that can be written as the quotient of any fraction x/y. While .34 is rational .3409 is slightly larger, and can be written as a fraction, such as 3409/10000.

I chose this over the repeating answers, because whether or not the 4 was repeating, or two 4’s were repeating, the answer would be the same.

I could be wrong, but this made the most sense.

No, .34 with 4 repeating is the answer

.344444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444444

.3409

All of them are rational. 1/3 is .33333333333333333333333333333333333333333333
