***OFFICIAL AP Calculus BC Thread 2013***

Eww, you don’t need to know what those are for the exam, but…

Let’s say we want to prove that the limit as x approaches 3 of 4x-1=11.

We can say:
Given Epsilon > 0, let delta = E/4. Assume 0<|x-3|<delta.
|f(x)-L|=|(4x-1)-11|=|4x-12|=4|x-3|
4|x-3|<4delta
4(E/4)=E

You have to use the identities |f(x)-L|<E and 0<|x-a|<delta

PRINCETON REVIEW is by far better than BARRONS.

barrons just gives you worthless difficult problems
while
princeton review gives you thorough examples
(for practice problems, find official ap calc MC and frqs)

Barrons is like a mini-textbook for many subjects while PR actually helps you review. That said, if you get comfortable with the problems on Barrons, the AP exam should be a real breeze.

Hello everyone. So here’s my situation.
This summer, I decided to self - study Honors Algebra 2 and take a class for Honors Precalculus at the same time. I completed the class, which turned out to be not very complete in its teaching of the topics supposed to be covered. The class did teach Trig and vectors pretty fully but not polar or parametric in as much detail. For the topics that i felt were not fully covered in class, I learned from Khan Academy and other internet resources.
When I tried to test out in school, the math coordinator said I passed Algebra 2 but not Precalculus. However, he didn’t seem very happy about me testing out and I have heard from other students that he is not completely reliable or truthful; but it doesn’t make a difference now.
The main question i’m asking now is: Do you guys feel that I can self-study Calculus BC by the AP Exam? Also, what textbooks should I be using for this purpose?

guys If u search google, there’s a compiled list of all the multiple choice since 1987 I think

Dont study precalc. Its pointless. I skipped algebra 2 trig and precalc. I went in and took ap calc bc sophmore year, even though school didnt let me, i sat (physically) in class until teacher place me on roster. Precalc and Trig are BS. Just practice with the barrons book. I did every problem there was. Following that, print out some MIT calc 2 exams, do em. AP exam was a cake walk last year, so everyone should expect to get 5, cuz of the curve. To summarize it up, Precalc= absolute ********. Dont take it

Do those who get a 5 on Calc AB tend to get a 5 on Calc BC? My friend got a 4 for BC after getting a 5 for AB and I was getting a bit worried about the difficulty of this test.

^Not exactly that notion. BC compromises of AB and some extra stuff (kinda not sure of the exact topics right off the top of my head lolz).

But just wondering, what do you all do to study for BC tests? During the first trimester, I really struggled with the tests and usually made terrible grades on them (75 on the first and a downward trend from there) but I made the grade requirement to stay in the second tri of the course. I took one before Thanksgiving break and thought I did so-so on it, but everyone felt the same way about that test. I need a surefire way to make sure that I know the concepts and can apply them.

Also, if you guys need an additional resource, I suggest Calculus for Dummies and Calculus II for Dummies. Calc for Dummies is more on the precalc review and Calc I material, while Calc II for Dummies is more on integration and some multivariable calc and DiffEq concepts. I was just reading over what I learned so far in Calc BC and I feel that I understand those concepts way more than just using my textbook and class notes.

Sorry for bumping this, but I’m just wondering where you guys are in terms of the material. I’m self-studying for this exam yet I’m just about to start Antidifferentiation. Should I speed up a little or should I take it easy?

I’m a sophomore. This and AP Euro will be my first AP exams. We’ve started discussing L’Hopital’s rule and other related stuff in class.

Let’s go!

CHINESETIGER: You should speed up. Check the course outline for BC starting on page 9: <a href=“Supporting Students from Day One to Exam Day – AP Central | College Board”>Supporting Students from Day One to Exam Day – AP Central | College Board;

Guys I have just a couple more days of Calc BC. Then solid two months review. Where’s everyone at?

@medicalboy
only a couple more days! wow you’re so lucky. my calc class is going so slow, we still have at least 3-5 more chapters left! plus my teacher hasn’t really talked or even mentioned the ap tests at all. i don’t know if she forgot or if she’s going to have us cram big time a week before the test.

My class finished BC a couple weeks ago. We just finished reviewing AB, and into BC now. My teacher is pretty fast. He learned from another teacher that it’s best to get all the material over with ASAP so there is time to review. It’s like going through all the material 2-3 times. With all that review time, one must be overprepared for the AP Exam.

OK. I’ve just decided to self-study Calc BC since im taking Calc AB this year (I’m a junior). Unfortunately, I’ve kinda put BC off till now. There are two months until the exam. I planned out everything i’m going to do on the weekends and some during the week these next 2 months, but i just wanted to know if it was doable. I’m scared I won’t learn it in time, but I really want a 5. It’s too late to go back to just AB, since I’m already signed up. Any words of encouragement? Am i in over my head?

@hurdle best of luck to you! Make sure you stick to your plan because you don’t have any time to waste. I believe in you!!

As for my class, we just started our last chapter and will finish by spring break. Then we’ll have a little over a month to study.

8-10 hours? Ok, I can do that. I think I’m successfully channeling panic mode into productive mode haha. thx guys!

I am taking pre-cal now and actually it is too easy for me… I just started self-studying Cal BC yesterday… is it necessary to memorize all the common derivatives? And do I need to know how to proof the derivative rules to answer FR questions?

I am in the AB class and will be taking the BC exam, and my teacher has told me that he will be covering topics for the BC exam. I took a Barrons practice exam this morning and got 20 of the 45 multiple choice questions wrog. Then, I did not get like 2 FRQ’s!! I am so screwed… But I wanted to know:

 1. how one can review all the material of the exam
 2. How to grade the BC exam in the Barron’s 12th edition AP Calculus book (without CD)

@hokage
You did the EXACT same thing I did! High five!
