@Kitsyxoxo If you google “ap english language practice exam 2008” it comes up on a website called culliton I believe. I scored around where I normally do on the 2012 one (in the 70’s) but I was in the 90’s on the 2008 one, so let me know if you have a similar experience!
Ok thank you so much @emm098
@dsi411 Hypophora is when the speaker asks a question and then gives an answer. For example, “Why do we allow people to mock us? We allow people to mock us because we, as an entity, are weak.” Everything else you outlined are things I always cover with my SOAPSTone approach to the essay. I’m hoping for 7-8’s on all the essays and decent MC for a 5.
I learned some more obscure terms to try to come off as more impressive, but I only plan on using the devices with the greatest effect.
so… how are you supposed to technically STUDY for this AP ? i mean, if you aren’t a good writer aren’t you screwed.?
btw let’s make a KIK chat so we can talk on there. we did that for ap biology… someone pm me their kik username so i can add them
Does anyone know if it’s a big deal if you only do 2 body paragraphs/points for each essay, because I’m not very fast at the essays so I feel like that would save time, but if that would negatively impact my score then…
How close do you guys think the 2015 exam curve will be the 2007 one? Curious because thats the latest I can find (from appass). Would the percentage to get a five be easier or harder for later years?
@blaked they have to be very strong paragraphs imo to get away with it. Do very in depth analysis and commentary
For the argumentative, can I use movies such as Star Wars as examples to support my point ? Or will the graders be expecting something more mature and related to literature ?
Honestly, it’s amazing that some of you all find the MC easy… I was slacking off on this AP because I had others to study for and I got an A+ last semester so I thought I’d do fine. Then I took a test… :-S
Any suggestions for the argumentative essay? The others are rather simple, since synthesis gives you the sources and you just need to really understand basic rhetoric for the analysis… If you just come up with a random argument for those two and make it sound convincing it’ll be fine. But argumentative… what do you even do? I think we only went over it once in class…
@leafasao the argumentative essay is basically just picking a side on a matter. For example, why should or why shouldn’t school uniforms be enforced? I would say to try to include some sources with relevant matters, especially classic literature. I would say to google ap english language frq. The college board website pops up, and then review the argumentative question and some example student responses. That can give you a sort of idea for how to answer the question. Good luck!
@ProBoundz I have heard that the outside sources you refer to should be english-based, more particularly well known pieces, such as speeches, plays, and classic novels. Although I have heard it is better to use English sources, since it is the AP English Language exam, I do not know how referencing something non-literature would score. I say if you feel confident in how you are presenting it, only do it if you are referencing some sort of English in the movies. Otherwise, try to refrain from using anything other than literature. Good luck!
@madmik Thanks so much for giving me those tips! They were really helpful.
One question though: We need to reference stuff? Can it be things from our past? And will we get penalized if we make a mistake while referencing? Like for instance, if you were talking about how often people let crimes be committed in broad daylight, and you referenced the murder of Kitty Genovese, but mixed up her story, would that hurt the score? (I know you said literature-based is the best, but I could think of any off the top of my head.)
Can anyone talk about their strategy on attacking the essays given the chunk of time all at once?
I plan to use 10 minutes for synthesis and 5 for rhetoric skimming. Once I can start writing, I’m doing synthesis first, rhetorical, and then the argument.
I’m lucky because I’m a writer, so the word flow will come easier. When I took AP Lit last week, I thought it was fun. Unfortunately, AP Lang is nonfiction so I doubt any of our passages will trend on Twitter.
wait so can we use literary examples in our argument essay? like say “this is similar to Scarlett’s predicament in Gone With the Wind…” when proving our point, or does it have to be actual events?
@sillyface you can, and my teacher encouraged us to use them too. I think the most preferable thing is to mix both current events and literature themes from books in the essays
Is the argumentative essay supposed to be similar to like an SAT essay, as in three examples with an intro and conclusion?
I’m going to do so bad on this MC. I hate MC passage based reading tests with an absolute passion. The essays will be ok though.
Is the 2012 practice exam easier than the actual exam or is it a good indicator? Cause i got a 94 percent and I don’t think I’m really that good at the mc
