Official Carnegie Mellon Class of 2020 Applicants Discussion Thread

For those of you who paid your enrollment, did you guys get your password for your andrew account?

It took around a while, around a week or so. I enrolled April 28 and got the password info today. @idkName

@idkName Yes. I received the email to set my password about 4 business days after I submitted my deposit.

Have you guys done your housing and meal plan yet? If so, where do i do that?

Hi I’ll be applying to cmu in the fall i was wondering if I could see your portfolio to get a heads up on what’s to be expected? Thank u!

@Mlbanana I’m someone who was waitlisted (they waitlist about 10 people apparently) so technically my portfolio was “good enough”. Read the portfolio criteria very carefully and if you follow it precisely that will definitely increase your chances. I had a good mixture of design pieces and fine arts, and I also completed the design project so I highly recommend doing that if you’re starting out with more fine arts pieces This summer, work on your portfolio!!! and if you’re sure about cmu do ED. The portfolio review is also extremely important, just hope that you get an amiable reviewer (have questions prepared-they’ll ask u to ask them a question most likely). In all, I’ve seen a few portfolios of people who got in as well as current students’ (go on the cmu design page to look at all the current students’ work), and they’re all very different. As long as you stand out (in a good way), you’ll get in. Good grades didn’t even help me it seems. Also make sure to write an awesome essay. Good luck!

@Mlbanana Not sure who you were referring to but if it was me I’ll be happy to send you a link to my work via private messagr, and we can chat a little more about design while we’re at it. Just give me a heads up.

@mlbanana

@lolcollegeh gave great advice. I didn’t have an on-campus portfolio review so don’t feel that it’s completely necessary, but from what I hear, it helps your chances. Another important thing is to demonstrate genuine interest in CMU. Put in a lot of careful thought into your overall application package. Read the portfolio requirements and satisfy them. Don’t just submit the same portfolio you might submit to other places as well.

They also like to see that you’re well-rounded. CMU has great music programs, so I talked about my interest in music in my essay and also incorporated some pieces in my portfolio with musical influences, which showed my interest in attending CMU and participating in its music programs.

Just curious, how will your financial aid differ year to year? Will I still expect the same amount of money when i apply it during freshman year?

@idkName It should stay roughly the same from year to year if the economic status of your family (EFC, assets, etc) stays roughly the same. I’ve heard reports of FA packages going up for good grades (i.e retention).

The Student Information Online (SIO) portal is active now. You can start reviewing the courses you’re planning on taking.

did you get any info about your acedemic advisor? where can you find this info?

So, 47 admitted to the school of art, I wonder how many were admitted just for multi media. Any idea?
SFA includes architecture, design, drama, music, fine art and multi media. Roughly guessing bigger portion goes to design, architecture, fine art and drama…then around 4-5 for multi media…scary.

@genesis123
Not sure what you’re referring to by “multi-media” but if it helps you at all, 3 of the 43 students who enrolled to the School of Design are BXA students.

Anyone know when they release the hosuing assignments?

@idkName July 1

just curious, can we request room/roommate change right now?

@idkName According to discussions in the FB chat, no. You cannot request room changes until after Move In day. Even then, it’s discouraged to do so.

Also, please join the FB group if possible (cover photo has the text “something something RED 9”). A lot of current students are active there and are answering a lot of our questions.

If you are a full time undergraduate, does the number of units you take affect your tuition cost?
